How does one determine if their gun is out of battery? Obviously if a round won't fully chamber or the gun won't lock up and actually fire, sure, easy. But I have read about some guns being able to fire while not completely locked up.

I received a new barrel for my XD and it drops in, hand cycles, and the trigger works, but it seems really tight. I have cycled snap caps without issue, but I have yet to take it to the range.

How do you know if it is correctly locking up? Should I be concerned about it firing out of battery?

A very rare malfunction. I don't worry about it and recommend you don't either. If you are constantly worried about a malfunction your groups will suffer.

The slide will go as far forward with a round chambered as it does on an empty chamber.

The chamber portion of the barrel will cam up and into the recess of the slide. This doesn't happen until the very last millimeter or so of slide travel, so I would imagine it is very rare for an autoloading pistol to fire out of battery.
