I'm looking at a 686 no dash, 6in bbl with houge grips. It does not have the original wood grips, papers or box (not that that matters too much to me as this will be a hunting gun).

The gun is in very good shape, and checks out well. The dealer is asking $569, but as this is my first handgun, I have no idea what a fair price would be. I've looked at gunbroker and understand that the prices there can be a bit inflated, but I also didn't see a 6 in. no dash. I've also used the search feature here, but didn't see any recent prices on these guns.

I'm just interested in getting a fair price. I understand dealers need to make a living and I don't begrudge them that, I just don't want to be taken to the cleaners.

686's are not scarce. It's a fine gun and available in the market at probably about $400-$500 price range. And up.

Recently, I bought a 98% 4" 686-1 with original wooden grips and box for $425.

Regional differences may be at work, of course. But the Blue Book puts a 98% 686 at $400 and the SCSW puts an Excellent 686 at $425.

Good luck.

i bought the blued version, 6" 586 no-dash for $365 almost two years ago. i can understand why there may be a premium for the stainless, but i'm not sure it's worth $200 extra.

just my $0.02

I can't keep track of older S&W price hikes but it still seems a touch high.

I got a 686-no-dash, 6" barrel with box and gadgets - marked at 489.00 this last March. Lightly used, correct stocks but with a molested strain screw. I intend to replace the screw with one of correct length.

It has no "M", so I guess one should add whatever pain and aggravation one's time is worth in dealing with that, assuming one is going to deal with it. I don't intend to.
