I picked up a used Berreta Stampede "Deluxe" which has a painted on color case hardened finish on the frame. The prior owner got some ammonia based bore cleaner on the frame which removed some of the painted on finish. The frame under the painted on finish is a brown/gold color. At this point, would the best option be to remove the rest of the painted on color case finish? After that should I put a clear coat over the frame or just keep it oiled?

Even though you are a second owner, I would contact Beretta and ask if they would make any necessary corrections. With Ruger's "New Vaquaro" coming on the market you are going to see a real dogfight between the remaining Single Action makers to keep or gain market share. Beretta really doesn't want to see posts like the one you just made, and I suspect they will ask that you return the revolver so that they can inspect it. After that I believe they will correct the problem.

I have seen people apply cold blue with a Q-Tip in a circular pattern in an attempt to make a repair - sometimes works and sometimes doesn't.

The best correction is to remove the present finish by polishing, and then blue the frame.

Thanks for the input, I'll give Berreta a call before I do anything. I was trying to avoid the cost of a reblue for now, but I had considered it.

There have been earlier reports of the condition you described, and it is quite possible Beretta had some problems with first-production guns. In any case, it is in they're best interest to keep you a satisfied owner. If they see it otherwise you can turn to other alternatives. If nothing else one of the inexpensive "spray & bake" finishes from Brownells (www.brownells.com) would work until you decided if you liked the revolver well enough to put more money into it.

Generally speaking, none of these "case-color finishes," (that should not be confused with real bone & charcoal case hardening) has proved to be very satisfactory. Ruger has problems with this too. The gunmakers would be far better off if they droped the phoney stuff and went to a full blued finish.
