Can someone explain to me the point of fake sound suppressors, or is there even a point to them? Do they add weight the barrel or something? Do they have any effect on the gun at all other than to make it look more tactical?

Just curious...I'm bored:rolleyes:

There are some minimum length laws in the USA where fake moderators actually keep the gun legal.

Peace

Mostly used to make your gun look cool, cover up an extended barrel (so it doesn't look like the civilian version of a military arm), and make your associates think you are a gun ninja or something. Instead of being a poser, expend the effort and get a real one.

Unless you live in a state/locale/country where such real devices are illegal and you use said device to bring your firearm up to minimum length requirements.

I believe the proper term would be "silencer-envy".

Because when I post the picture of me holding my gun with a silencer attached to the end while wearing my mall nija outfit on my Myspace page, no one knows the truth but me

I will soon be purchasing my first gun,but Im undecided toward which one. I have narrowed it down to three choices and would like to know your opinions. Springfield xd, Smith & Wesson M&P, Beretta px4. All in 9mm.I have shot all three at the range and from my little experience I still cant decide but believe all three to be excelent guns. please help.

Hollywood uses them. The audio engineers then insert the fake "pfffft" sound in the soundtrack to make the viewers think it was a suppressed gunshot when it was a blank.
I guess someone thought they'd be a cool commercial item for gunnies who will be satisfied for the fake one when the can't get, or don't want to go through the licensing hassle to get a real one.

The main reasons have already been given. Some minor extra reasons. If it has a stub barrel (legal on pistol) it can give you a longer sight radius. (ok only seen one with front sight mounted on it and it did look off)
It (should) reduce muzzle flash slightly. It will give you a (poor) front grip area (reall one would burn/cut your hands.)
Personally unless the caliber has already burned it powder charge I would rather have barrel for that length to improve volocity.

I would assume that anything added to a short barrel to insure it meets a minimum legal length must be permantly attached. I know this is the case with AR's having a 14" barrel. When you add a flash hider to these to make the requisite 16" lenght it must be permanently attached so it cannot be removed with hand tools using a method such as 1100deg. solder or blind pinning.
