FAL Bolt carrier hanging up 2/3 way into receiver with DSA mount

Just as the subject says. I have an FAL. No, I am not a noob with it. Yes, I know to uncam the bolt carrier. Yes, I tried point the muzzle down. It worked fine with the old receiver cover. There is something in the DSA mount that is physically preventing the bolt carrier from going into battery that is impinging the movement on the left hand side. Whatever it is it is from the mount. Just dropping the bolt carrier into the upper receiver causes it to get stuck and requires considerable force to get loose. And yes, the brackets that secure the mount are turned the correct way. Any ideas before I call DSA?

Are the bracket screws fully tightened? I had this issue with another brand of FAL scope mount when test-fitting it with the screws loose. Until tightened, that one had plates sticking out into the path of the carrier.

Any obvious defects, bumps or high spots in the inside of the scope mount? Is your carrier good and in spec (realizing that all FAL carriers I've ever heard of are either military surplus or DSA manufactured)?

Is there anything unusual about your charging handle?

Can you post pictures?

I think Z-Michigan nailed it; one or more of the "plates"/brackets on the inside that connects the mount to the receiver is not seated correctly. There is really no other possibility barring some completely foriegn piece of debris, etc.

Getting it seated right is a bit of a pain, but once there you don't have to move it that often. My biggest worry with it is that some of the screws will back out and allow for the kind of binding you are seeing.

Yep the backing plate is not seated correctly, that happened with mine.
Do not go cranking on the screws that DSA supplied, you will strip them out.
They only engage about two threads, it doesn't take much torque to bugger them up.

I tossed the slotted screws they shipped in the trash.
I picked up 12 button head screws for less than $2.
The threads now fully engage and I used blue loctite to make sure they stay there.

--Man I love my HK claw mount.

I had the same issue with my G1 FAL and a top cover scope mount. That and to clean and maintain the action properly I had to remove that top cover and the scope would lose zero.

The claw mount is so much easier. I like the FAL, but I love the HK 91

You don't have to remove it for regular cleaning. You can reach pretty good with a Q-tip, and the FAL isn't a "spic-n-span" type rifle anyway. And this is coming from someone who is fairly OCD about rifle cleaning.

+1 FAL's like dirt.

As a previous poster stated careful of the amount of torque you put on the DSA screws. Also, cross-torque those screws when putting the cover on just like you tighten lug bolts.

Good Luck,

Just went through this yesterday

One of the plates is not seated in the dust cover slot correctly. You should be able to figure out which one by when the bolt carrier got stuck. Back the screws off just enough to feel loose. Then stick your finger inside the scope mount and wiggle the plate a bit. You will feel the plate seat and the screw should be a little taller than they were before you wiggled the plate. Now with your finger still holding the plate in place gently tighten the screws. Before you torque them down try the bolt carrier again. Repeat as necessary until all are flush.
