Last week my wife asked me how hard the CCH class was to pass. She also asked if I thought she could have one.:what: My wife started out our marriage against guns in the house "what about the kids?" Being my bullheaded self, I kept my guns where I wanted them to be, and as time went by she and the girls all took hunter safety. Mostly for the safety training, one daughter likes to hunt though.:D

Off and on through the years she has shown an interest in shooting. I quickly lost my buckmark to her at the range the first time she shot it. It is now considered her gun and is entitled all of her protection from weak moments in the gunshop, mine.

With her question the other night the wheels started to turn in my brain and we began a discussion on guns and shooting. By the way, at the time this discussion began we were watching a couple of shooting shows on the Outdoor Channel. We discussed the different types of pistols and revolvers, with a promise of going to the range sometime. :)

Friday night we went out with friends of ours and the subject of shooting came up. We discussed my wife's desire to have a CCH and our friends wife said "If you want to, I'll get one with you.":what: again!

Saturday was one of those rare, beautiful days and after the yard work was done we loaded up and headed to the range. I took her buckmark, with red dot sight, a 1911, an xd40, a 16.40 LDA, and a 586 with a bull barrel. Pretty much spanned the styles of guns I have at this time.

She warmed up with the .22 and then quickly moved on the the other guns. The first was the 586. It has a bobbed hammer and is DAO. With the heavy bull barrel it really dampens the recoil and she was shooting double action really well. The L frame is a little too large for her hands though.

The second was the xd. After getting her dominant eye figured out, left but right handed, and her grip situated she began to shoot. The recoil caught her off guard at first but as she began to grasp the gun better she was hitting and grouping great! Too much recoil to be enjoyable for long.

The third was the Para LDA. She didn't spend too much time with it as the grip is way too large. She did like the LDA trigger. She still shot it great though.

The 1911 was last. I began to fear for it as she said "I really like the way this one feels." We loaded magazines and went to the line with the .45. She shot it great but still the recoil is more than she wants. Whew. We talked about recoil at length and discussed that as a new shooter she would gradually get used to recoil the more she shoots, however, she doesn't need to keep shooting something if it hurts.

On a whole though, she likes revolvers better than autos. Easier to load and unload. I think she's going shopping when we get to KC later this month. I think she'll like a K frame for its size.

She did go back to the 586 and shot the remainding ammo at the plate racks. She was running 6 plates with 6 shots double action from 10 yards, with a big grin.

All in all, I didn't even miss not getting to shoot much. A wonderful day with my wife.

if you don't reload, or buy ammo in bulk, you soon will.

trust me on this.:D

and when your kids get really interested it gets worse.

i have personal experience with this phenomenon.:D

I do reload lots. I shoot IDPA usually twice a month when I can. I keep the flap off the boxes of primers when I empty a thousand round box and I counted them the other day. 14 flaps just in the last 3 to 4 years since I started that habit. That doesn't count the years prior to that when I shot a lot more. Something like 10 to 12 thousand a year.

it's nice that your wife decided to try it.

my wife has her chl and practices regularly.

now my stepdaughter (13) has joined us, and it does make for fun family time.

the only down sides are a higher ammo bill, and picking up all that brass from the yard.

i think it's worth it, because they can defend themselves without depending on 911 if i'm not around.
