Hey everyone. Just got started reloading. I've been doing .223 for my AR, now I want to fill a bunch of brass I have for my other love, my REM 700 .30-06. I've mostly shot 150 gr. Core lokt out of it, but was wondering if any of you have tried 110 gr. Sp's? Any other recommendations?

i tried a lot of combinations for my M70 before reading someone's post that went along the lines of "if a 30-06 won't shoot a 165 grain bullet pushed by 57 grains of IMR 4350, it just won't shoot". Tried that load using Sierra BTSP's and got < 1 moa. Done.

I know its a light bullet, I was just wondering if anyone had tried it. I have had success with 165, so maybe ill stick with that or 150. I was just thinking about trying something new.

my father in law won't deer hunt with anything but a 110 gr in a .30-06

i think it's kinda dumb, but i can't argue with his results.

Slade,

I have several loads in the .30-06 that I'm partial to. Since you mentioned the 150gr bullet, this is the one I like in that weight. Winchester cases...184.0GR +/-.7gr...59.0gr of H-4350... CCI#250 primers...150gr...Nosler Partition Bullet...group=5@100 yards=.291"...Velocity=2974 fps...Ext. Spd=5.7 fps...Std. Dev.=3.0 fps...M.A.D.=2.2 fps.

I don't load the 110gr bullet in the '06. If I am going after something that the 110gr bullet would be used for, I prefer to change rifles to a .243 Win. 75gr bullet. :)

I loaded up 6 or 7 different 110gr loads just before the Winter hit. Unfortunately I can't give you any results because I didn't shoot any of them yet. I doubt I'll ever use a 110gr load but I just have to fool around with loads it seems! When the weather breaks I'm going to check them for accuracy and velocity.

I used 150 gr. Nosler Ballistic Tips over 57 gr. IMR 4350 for 20 years for groundhogs and deer. My 700 usually shoots 100 yard groups that touch with that load.

For YEARS on PA Whitetails, I loaded 180 grain Remington Core-Loks over 46 grains of 4064 for myself an a couple of buddies.
Sadly, the round-nosed version of this bullet is no longer available to reloaders in .30 caliber.
The "semi -point" version of this bullet shoots well in both my Model 70's and my Savage Edge so I think I'll stay with it.

This load works well in my 30-06

I have a Winchester Model 70 with a 24" barrel and the following load shoots very well for me. Normally shoots .75" 3 round groups @ 100 yards. I used this load in Africa and took Nyala and Blue Wildebeest along with Impala,Warthog etc.

Federal Brass
Federal 210M Primer
180 Grain Nosler BT or Partition
55 grains W760

For the '06 I prefer H4350 and any common flat base bullet between 150 to 180 grain. It is hard to do better than the Nosler 165 partition for general use with the old 30-06.

30-06 110gr HP

This is a load that I used in my Winchester Mod 70 it might work in a Rem.

Case-RP Bullet Sierra 110gr HP Primer-Win.LR Powder IMR 4895 50.6gr OAL 3.000" Vol. 3,193 fps

I hope it works for you

I like 56.5-57.0 grains of IMR 4350, or 57.0-57.5 grains of H4350 with a 165-168 grain Nosler ballistic tip. I had some really awesome groups with 50.5 of Varget with 150 grain Nosler btips. I have also had pretty good luck using Reloader 17 powder.

I haven't loaded anything lighter than 150 grain bullets, but my .25-06 really loves 110 grain bullets.

Best accuracy - 5 shots in .5" at 100 yards - was with 55 grains IMR4350 and 180 grain Sierra RNSP.

i tried a lot of combinations for my M70 before reading someone's post that went along the lines of "if a 30-06 won't shoot a 165 grain bullet pushed by 57 grains of IMR 4350, it just won't shoot". Tried that load using Sierra BTSP's and got < 1 moa. Done.
Well my 30-06 won't shoot that load but with 59 grs H4831 SC and a Sierra 165 Gameking it will. A friends rifle will shot this same load just as well if not better.

I've become a big fan of the 165gr bullet in the 30-06. I now load 165gr/168gr bullets most of the time. I use a charge of 58.0gr H4350 or 57.0gr IMR4350 under a 165/168gr bullet. (mostly Hornady and Sierra)

H4350 and the Nosler 168gr Custom Competition bullet for a good-shooting match load. But it's been so long since I loaded anything for the odd-six, I can't remember more than that.

Thanks!

Thanks everyone for all the advice, i've got a lot of work to do, you've all given me a bunch of loads I want to try now. I agree with the reasoning of not using the 110's that those of you who were against it said. Thanks again!

I played around a lot with the 110's when I was in college in the mid-'70's.

I found that IMR4064 gave me the best results. I got as high as 3,500fps as determined by an ancient chronograph, but best accuracy results were at around 3,400fps. I consulted my old Speer #9, and my notes reveal I was using the Hornady 110gr HP's over 58.0gr of IMR4064.

This was the max load at that time. My velocities were 60-120fps faster than the manual as I was using a 24" bbl with 4-groove rifling.

USE THIS LOAD WITH GREAT CAUTION. THIS IS FROM A 40YR OLD MANUAL !!!!!!!!

The 110's offer great expansion and terminal effect, but don't expect complete penetration on even small deer.

If I was going to work up a load for the 110's, I'd use the Hornady V-max. But, most likely I'd use the Nosler 125gr Ballistic Tip as both it and the 125gr Sierra PtSpt were superior in accuracy in all loads tested.

None of my 110gr loads would break MOA from my rifle. However, few of the 125gr loads exceeded MOA. This is likely the reason that 110's have never been real popular.....

57 gr of IMR 4350 and Hornady 165 BTSP or Nosler partition 165 work well in my Rem 700
