I joined these boards just a few days ago (July 30th, 2005) and I like getting on here and sharing everything with fellow shooters. It gets pretty hot out here (Phoenix) in the summer, so the best thing to do is stay inside and load up for the cooler months and hunting season, which are around the corner.

What are your favorite pistol and rifle calibers?

Mine are
Pistol: 9MM, 357 and .44 magnum.
Rifle: 22-250 Rem, 6MM Rem, 25-06 Rem, 280 Rem, 308 Win, and the 300 Win magnum.

I sure hate to be a little ol' fasioned, but .30-30 Winchester for a rifle and .357 mag Colt SAA for a hand gun. Although I do enjoy my Browning .30-06 and Colt .45 ACP (just a bit fixed up)...Actually I don't mind being a little ol' fasioned...In fact I rather enjoy it. :neener:

Rifles_ .22 hornet, .44 mag, .22 LR, .30-06, .243
Pistols - 22, 38 spl, 44 mag, 45 LC, .44 and .36 BP
Contender - 410/45, 30-30, 22 Hornet

Not to mention a bunch of shotguns

I thought this was for your favorite rifle and handgun...Not an inventory of all your firearms.. O K...Three shotguns (12 and 16s, two high powered rifles, three .22 rifles, one .22 pistol (Colt Woodsman), three .357 magnums, three .38 specials, one 9mmX19, one .45 ACP (Colt), one Black powder .50 rifle (TC Hawken), Grandpa's .38 short rimfire (black powder) and an assortment of other firearms retired or no longer used. I hand load for all of them except the shotguns...

Cheese.

Here in the Ozarks, it don't get that hot in the summer. All time high since 1996 was 101.3 last week.

Since I cast my own bullets, I gotta go pistolwise with .38 spl, .45 acp, .363 (9MM makarov) and for rifles, .308 (naturally) with 30-06, 30-30 and .311, since I have a bunch of old enfields.

I love light loads with lead bullets. I have loaded up rounds in my No. 4 Mk 1. Enfield at like 700 fps. Subsonic.

You pull the trigger. It goes "Bang". You look up. You hear, "Tink". You look through the spotting scope to see where the bullet hole is.

I don't have a "Need for Speed".

That's what I thought too. Actually, the .38 Special and the 7mm-08 are my wifes. And I havn't used my 30-06 for years. Those are still 3 of my favorite cartridges though.

Got ya Bandit. But isn't the 10mm actually a .40 caliber? I mean doesn't the .40 S&W shoot the same diameter bullet as the 10mm Auto, only a lot better? Just kidding with you. I like the 10mm also. I just don't have one yet. ;)

I guess I forgot one more category of firearms, shotguns; I like the 12 gauge. I also do my own custom loads for everything.

Looks like everyone has a good choice of calibers here, and I'm surprised to see a lot of people use the 45-70. I think all calibers are pretty good, except the 25 ACP, and the 6.5 and 7.35 Carcano calibers. The 25 ACP is okay for plinking and training somebody who's never handled firearms before, but when it comes to self-defense situations, you'll have a better chance with a 22 LR. I never cared too much for the Carcano rifle calibers either, mainly because of their bad reputation.

Has anyone ever tried one of those new beltless magnums we've been hearing about so much lately?

I won't restrict myself to only calibers I can reload for, because:

Rifle (1st place): 22LR. I can shoot 22LR from dawn to dusk and not go broke doing it. I've put a military sling, a good trigger, and a full size scope on my little .22 bolt gun, making it perhaps the silliest .22 at the range (imagine it saying, in a little kid's voice, "I want to be a real rifle when I grow up!"). But I can afford to shoot it enough that perhaps someday I will get enough practice in me to become a rifleman.

Rifle (2nd place): 7.5 Swiss, more because I love the rifle itself than because I like the caliber. It's a fun and easy caliber to load, though, and it sure makes a fun boom and flash and enough recoil that I know I'm shooting a real gun.

Handgun: 45 ACP, even though I don't have one. I just like it. I just like rifles more, so I keep buying them instead of a nice 1911. In the mean time, I'll keep reloading for the 9mm mousie gun I carry.

Favorite calibers:

1. 22lr/long/short/cb/etc
Shoot all day long for less than $10. Accurate, too.

2. .357/.38
So many different loadings available for all kinds of uses. Low power .38's for small game...180 grain hard-cast screamers for bigger stuff. All kinds of loads in between.

There are lots of others that I like (9mm, .223, .45-70...) but If all I had was .22 and .357/.38, I'd be Ok.

45-70

I actually like the amount of TIME it takes to drop powder charges...

'course it would be even worse if I loaded BMG ammo, but I don't.

The most fulfilling ammo to load is my 308...or my 7-30, or 300 Savage, or....AAGH!!! :cuss: I hate these kinds of questions!!! There really is no one answer for me. As soon as I choose one, then another pokes up and makes me think more...why I love reloading!
