I'm chagrined. I've got every book, journal entry, letter, and newspaper article by John Steinbeck that I can find. And I can't begin to guess where that quote comes from. His Arthurian book? Please spill.

I've heard the version "Diplomacy is the art of saying 'Nice doggie' until friendly sniper gets the range" too. IIRC it was a signature to a picture of sniper with M82A1
