Rifle and Handloader used to be must buys. Now less so, but still tempting.

Greys sporting journal is still pretty good, if you can get past the adds for $5K artwork.

Varmint hunter is probably the best pure rifle shooting mag out there, lots to learn from guys who kill PD's at 1100 yard plus,

Precision shooter magazine is really good. accurate rifle folded a few years ago that was a good one too.

I like CP and Mas, but the rest of american handgunner is a bit too over the top. It used to have really good articles about custom handgun smiths, which actually told you something about them, showed some of the tooling and set-ups, but that stopped awhile ago.

Here's another vote for "Concealed Carry," from the U.S. Concealed Carry Assn. it's a no B.S. magazine totally dedicated to concealed carry in all aspects. The only magazine I have ever read cover to cover, word for word.

Interesting the comments about Rifle and Handloader. My absolute favorites for a number of years, and yeah, the quality has really dipped in the last two years or so. IMO, the loss of Ross Seyfried was a real blow. John Barsness still turns out good articles, but the rest of the staff ranges from average to pretty bad.

I remember Precision Shooting from the "good old days" of badly edited and just plain strange articles from the readership, along with enough three dot ellipses to last a lifetime. Was the only source of benchrest news and info though.

My vote is for American Handgunner. Not perfect, but honest, with great pics and some pretty good articles. J.D. Jones epitomizes the slob hunter, however, and brings the whole rag down a notch.

Small Arms Review is my current favorite.
Same here. They usually have information about stuff that is impossible to find on the internet (even THR and TFL) and their articles about federal gun laws are hard to beat.

that's a sore topic

It WAS Women's Outlook. But NOOOOOOOOOO, the stupid NRA had to go and CANCEL it. So now we're going to get some rag I don't want about gun control. :fire: :cuss: :banghead:

Thats easy, Small Arms Review. Its the only one that contains info that can't be found by searching old THR posts. Uzitalk maybe seeing as many SAR writers post there, but I never did like that bunch of NFA elitests, so I read the magazine.

I'm kind of partial to the 17 round magazines I have for my Hi Power.

Those and American Rifleman.

This is the only magazine I read from time to time. Currently I do not have a subscription, just read a issue when I come across one someone has.

With Internet, I get what I want. I also know a few folks, some that contribute to SWAT, other magazines, other Internet "magazines" that I can communicate with.

I took Field & Stream for years , I did so because I grew up reading Robert Ruark in them. I still have a few F&S from 1955, the year I was born.
I continued taking F&S because Bob Brister was editor/ contributor. My subscription was renewed when he stopped writing.

Interesting for me, some of the same things are being hashed. In 1955 there is an article ".243 vs 6mm", Tapley shares using light , clear fishing line is best for clear water crappies - especially 4 # test, also shared is the fact it is NOT the firearm, it IS the shooter, that learns correct basic fundamentals, gets lessons, and does quality practice. I can see the pages in my mind in regard to which first gun for someone. The value of learning with a .22 , be it rifle or handgun. Review of the various .22 handguns, and how learning with a revolver shooting double action only is recommended.
My first gun is in that article. High Standard Sentential with a 9 shot cylinder.
Article has pictures and the Standard Model of Ruger MKI was cited as well with its $24.50 price tag.

SWAT gives me what I want, in honest reviews. I can read Ayoob, Farnam, Speir, Clint Smith, Awerbuck, and so many more today online as well.
Again, I can contact some writers, and some are members of Internet Fora.

Interesting is the fact WE have on THR and TFL and Sister sites , real persons that are in the firearm industry in so many facets. They may not actually write articles, or may have since retired from writing or editing. These folks have the hands on experiences of being involved from the design, and manufacture of firearm products to so much more.

For me, instead of a subscription , I can use that money for Internet Access.

None, I really don't find any of them of interest. Most of them are just advertising platforms for manufactures. Then again I don't subscribe to any magazines.

I raely buy gun magazines any more either. They are for the most part
a huge waste of money but I do occasionally buy Guns or American Handgunner magazines.

Rifle, once in awhile [Rifle] Handloader or Successful Hunter. Some of the more upmarket sporting journals have items featured that often appeal to me, but they also generally have too much filler as well. Rifle is the only one I generally buy, and sometimes pass it up too. No slight on some of the other writers (who are in the main very good - like John Barsness) but I miss Ross Seyfried's contributions to Rifle.

Another vote for "Guns" and its stablemate "American Handgunner". The only other subscription I have is to "The American Rifleman".

SWAT is usually pretty good. I occasionally pick up Shooting Times, but only if they are running an article about something OTHER than bolt-action, wooden-stocked rifles, hunting shotguns, or 1911's. Which is to say, I don't pick it up that often, but I bought one Wednesday because they had an article on an Alexander Arms AR. Ditto for Guns and Combat Handguns--I rarely buy them, but do on occasion.

I read Shotgun News occasionally if Kokalis has an article that interests me (Mosin-Nagants, civvie AK lookalikes, AR carbines) and because I enjoy looking at the ads for old milsurps.

A THR member kindly sent me a copy of Gun Tests and a couple Guns when my son was at Boston Children's for several weeks in 2003, and I couldn't find any gun mags at the Coop (surprise, surprise). That was my first and only exposure to the former, and I liked it, but no one locally carries it.

I also like Combat Handguns. There are usually a few reviews of quality pistols and revolvers in most issues.I enjoy reading their "It Happened to Me" stories and Rick Miller's Tactics column.
