So I was wondering about your favorite hunting in two areas.

First area is actual game, which is your favorite? Deer? Bear? Hog? Pheasent? Duck? Varmint? Etc.

Second is method. Do you like to sit and scan the area? Get up and stalk?

I havent' been able to do it for a long time - but rabbit hunting is among my favorites. Lot's of excercise and action (assuming the area has plenty of rabbits). Whitetail is next (mostly sitting).

My favorite hunting is any upland bird that involves a long day of walking and good pointers. I guess if I had to choose a specific bird I'd go with pheasant.

I have a great place up in the mountains where I hunt quail, tree squirrel, ground squirrel, and other misc. varmints during the same hunt. I use a shotgun (2x sidexside) and a rimfire scoped handgun. If I limit out on quail early, I'll get a varmint rifle out of the Jeep.

Overall, upland game and varmints are my favorites.

Waterfowl, either ducks in the marsh over dekes or geese over rags. Actually, my "rags" are the wind sock style on a dowel rod stuck in the mud. I've been addicted to waterfowl for a long time.

I love all hunting, though. I like to walk and stalk, glass from a ridge out west. Feeder watching for deer gets old pretty fast.

I also love to sit in the woods squirrel hunting. East Texas has lots of good squirrel hunting.

Deer hunting. Sitting in the tree stand waiting on the BIG BUCK.......:D

Grew up huntin' whitetail in Northern lower Michigan and the U.P.
Lever-action .30/30, scoped .30-06 or .270; love to walk (can't hang with tree stands) and move around ...

Second favorite is pheasant hunting in the fields with a enthusiastic dog. Gettin' to old to enjoy sitting in wet blinds in the sleet waitin' on ducks or Canada geese ...

I like to hunt deer more than anything, and that is saying a lot, because I like to hunt all manner of upland game, feathered or furred, and waterfowl also.
As to how I like to hunt, I won't tie myself to any particular method. Sometimes it's a stand, tree or ground (stand especially with a bow). Other times it's stillhunting, sometimes stalking, other times drives. Whatever seems appropriate at the time.

Ruffed Grouse all the way. Been after pheasants, but it isn't the same (they're all stocked here).
It's also a good way to scout for deer signs.

I think the reason I love to hunt squirrel and waterfowl is that when I was a kid, it was the only things I could hunt (rabbit, also) for free. Everything else took a lease. No public land on the gulf coast of Texas for deer and such. We had a few acres of woods that had squirrels and just go to the marsh for ducks.

Turkey hunting.

Involves a blend of sitting, waiting, stalking, walking, hiking, crawling on your belly. I'd climb trees if it got the gobblers to come in closer. :D

Dove hunting- by far is my favorite. Probably because I get to make my gun go boom many times in a day. Hey- if I'm going to have to clean the durn gun, I might as well get my money's worth. I love to shoot deer and hogs, but the time to shot ratio is too large for my enjoyment. Of course, when there are no birds flying (like opening day the last 3 years!!:cuss: ) then I'm in the same boat as deer hunting. Sitting under a big shade tree at the edge of a field or water hole with plenty of shells and hydrating fluids nearby really hits the spot. I'm working on going on a high volume dove hunt in Mexico in the future. Seems like a good time.

favorite critter... i think mule deer is #1, followed closely by antelope. whitetails rank in the top 10 probably (but doubtful they crack top-5).

favorite method: without a daoubt, it is spot-and-stalk... it is the ultimate cat-and-mouse game, and the entire stalk is an adrenalin dump. stalk may only last 15 or 30 minutes, but sometimes it lasts for hours...

i really enjoy squirrel hunting. i walk through the woods until i get to an area where there are big trees but little or no brush. i then sit down light a cigarette and wait. by the time my smoke is done my 10/22 usually has one bagged. i dont use a scope ii just shoot the closer ones that are within 25 yards or so.

quail hunting in arizona is probably my favorite. it's like hiking, but with a gun. i really get to enjoy the desert, and more often then not will bring home a couple rabbits. it's also very good for keeping the eyes sharp, and reacting quickly when you see movement.

nothing quite as satisfying as disturbing a flock, and dropping two quail and a rabbit in a few seconds.

i also enjoy hunting deer, but haven't been drawn in a couple years.

javelina are another favorite, those little buggers are lots of fun.

1st Whitetail Deer 2nd Canada Geese. Treestand for deer and blind for geese.;)

Bowhuning deer is first, quail, dove and bunny hunting is second.

Tree stand hunting back east and spot and stalk out this way for deer.

Walking washes for quail and bunnies and sitting by a water hole for doves.

#1 Dove (however I'd love quail just as much if I could shoot on the wing better - them suckers are quick.) I like dove meat better.

#2 hog or deer

#3 turkey, not that the hunt is incredibly enjoyable; but the meat in absolutly fantastic and quite a bit different from domestic turkeys.

Varmint hunting is an absolute blast (sorry for the aweful pun). I want to go after prarie dogs one day.

Birds.
Upland.
Waterfowl.
Whatever.

It's all good. :)

If forced to choose a single type and style, pheasants over dogs (flushers and pointers can both be great) is one of my favorite ways to spend time outdoors.

quail
pheasant
chukar
waterfowl
just got into deer this past season.
hope to get into turkey this coming season.

Hunting squirrels

i live for squirrel season, i cant get enough squirrel hunting in. wish i could quit work for the first two or three months of squirrel season and just live up in the CO mountains.

I have mostly hunted them with a .22 rifle, either a marlin 795, or 880SQ, or a Ruger 10-22 that i tricked out. I have recently gotten into handgunning for squirrel (and other game) with a Ruger MK II 22/45 6 7/8" Slabside compitition pistol with a Simmons 4X32mm pistol scope. Handgunning has really added a new, fresh demension to hunting for me, really brough out the adventure and sport of it. And yes, i do eat all the squirrels i shoot. wife doesnt like them, but she cooks up a mean Hot Wing Squirrel!

I usually walk very slowly through the trees, listening between footsteps for the barking. when i hear them barking or see them running through the trees or on the ground i stalk up as close as i can get and pop them. If i need to make them talk, i use the ridges on the grip of my pistol and make pine cone cutting sounds with my finger nail. it usually causes one or more of them to start barking.

Most of the squirrel hunting i do now is for the smaller Red Squirrels up in the mountains, but i really miss the big, corn fed Fox squirrels out in SD!

I love heading way back into the unspoiled wild country of the White River Breaks. This area is just east of Badlands Nat'l Park. Plenty of mulies to be found. When I was younger, I was focused upon big bucks. But one can display only so many racks before it looks weird.

Now I focus upon getting fairly close to a mature buck and taking him with my old 30-30 carbine. Some years I take a barren doe instead. But it is fun to be all by yourself with just the wind blowing through the junipers in premo mule deer country. Why am I the only hunter to venture into these canyons? Your guess is as good as mine but I'm thinking that lack of 4WD trails may have something to do with it.
