I have 100 boxer prime(unprimed new brass) hornady 7.65X53 cases and a .311 215grain Lyman mold I bought 20 years ago for .303 british. I would like a nice 1600-1800 fps cast load and a rccomendation on a hunting jacketed load (thinking heavy round nose, who makes it?) I don't want to strain the 1891 argie carbines(with tight head space in excellent cond) and have heard the heavy bullets will help the sights shoot to point of aim. I got 540 surplus 180grain rounds the other day and only shot 10 rounds at 50 yard but both my carbines seemed a foot high with lowest sight setting and almost no post showing.:) I am sending the carbine without bayonet to my son in Hawaai for pig hunting(he says he sees them on friends property) and want to send 50 hunting loads after I work them up.:)

I just started reloading this round for a friend at work. He was tired of paying high prices for factory loads. We decided to use 150 gr Sierra .311 game kings with 40gr WC846 powder. He says he is getting good groupings with them.

Gordon,

Red Dot and Unique tend to be VERY sooty when used in cast-lead rifle loads like this. Chamber pressure is low, so the powders burn sooty.

Both will work very well with about 10 grains.

And yes, they both work GREAT with 150-gr. bullets.

I can't even begin to tell you how many thousands of cast lead .30 cal. bullets I sent down range over the years, almost every one of them propelled by 10 to 12 grains of Red Dot.

10 grains in my .300 Savage, and 12 grains in my .30-06.

Out of my one .300 Savage the loads were accurate enough that I took several squirrel with them.
