Favorite Movie Shootouts

This is my first post. I am a history nut as well as a gun nut. Hey, two nuts are better than one.

What are your favorite movie shoot outs? And do you like them because of their accuracy or because they are just fun?

For fun, I like the bank robbery in “Heat” with DeNiro and Al Pacino. IMHO its one of the better shoot outs ever filmed.

For history, the Normandy landing in “Saving Private Ryan”. I don’t think there will ever be a better recreation of that landing.

So what are your favorites?

Best Shoot-out

I think the best shoot out was in "Open Range". I especially liked the opening shot straight to the forehead of a bad guy at point blank range.

Pretty much any of the shootouts in Band of Brothers. Especially Easy Company taking out the guns in the "Day of Days" episode.

my favorite would have to be "Way of the gun" which shootout? ll of them.

Though "Swat" wasn't a bad movie, the shoot out scenes were lacking, however knowing that the actor that played "Gamble" actually attended professional firearms training is a big A+ in my book.

Got to mention Heat, both outside the bank, and at the drive in theater. I also think the scene in the Korean nightclub in Collateral is worth bringing up.

Hard Target with Jean Claud Van-Dam, pretty much a shootout from beginning to end.

For fun, it would have to be the last shootout in "Quigley Down Under" where Quigley finally uses a revolver.

For history, maybe the Pickett's Charge scene in "Gettysburg" with the effect of long range musket fire, short range and canon against massed infantry.

Gunfights in movies tend to irritate me to a large degree. The terrible lack of accuracy of "bad guys", the completely unrealistic impact physics, and the amazing bottomless magazines. It's gotten to the point that even my wife laughs about it now. And she is seriously not a gun "nut". For the most part, I simply take it with a grain of salt. Like reading a really good novel and the protagonist talks about the safety on his Glock. (REALLY? It broke me out of the story for a few minutes I was so irked. Still a good book.)

But I think I will have to agree with the above post about the landing scene at the beginning of Saving Private Ryan. It was mostly historically accurate, it was a reminder of the heroic sacrifices that were made by Allied forces to take that beach. And a little more touching if you know (or sadly, likely knew) someone that was there.

I really like both final shootouts in Once Upon a Time in the West and the The Good, the Bad, & the Ugly. They were just wonderfully filmed. For realism, I think The Way of the Gun, Heat, and Collateral were all really well done.

Off the top of my head: The ending to "Wild Bunch", a few things from "Die Hard", every scene from "Black Hawk Down", I have been watching the "Rambo" series and they are pretty decent.

Some people have mentioned "Heat", I am watching that on Netflix but had to stop 1/2 way through, I can finish it tonight.

There are so many other good ones, the end of "Unforgiven" just popped into my head.

The bank robbery scene in Heat is probably teh best full auto shoot out on camera.
The shoot out in No Country For Old Men was wonderful in the book and strangely wasn't nearly as good in the movie.

My favorites are mentioned already, except for 2 of them that are concealed carry situations against multiple bad guys. One is Tom Cruise's character in Collateral, and there was an impressive one near the beginning of the latest Rambo movie:

One of my all time favorites. I heard they showed it to some WWII vets that were on that landing to gauge the accuracy of it and they commented that the only thing missing was the smell.
