I have no experience with salty air, but I've shot plenty of sporting clays in the rain. BF CLP is all I've ever used and I've never had any rust on a gun.

Many will say that Eezox is better then BF and they may well be right. But few retail stores carry Eezox and I'm not interested in using a product that I have to order online. Everyone sells BF CLP.

In east TX where I live the humidity is high, and we do get our share of rain. I have found that M-Pro 7 LPX to be the finest for this task. Applied with an old shaving brush, it does not run, attract dust or lint, or get gummy. Further it is a fantastic lube in it's own right. I have never seen a speck of rust on any of my weapons since I started using this product. It's like CLP, but better in all respects. Now in line with your question, you're going to receive dozens of responses with other's choices. I have given you my choice of oil for the job and I firmly believe that everyone has a good answer for you. I came upon this product when looking for something that would keep the rust off my BP weapons and then expanded into all my other weapons as well. For me, it is the best that I have found. I wish you well in your quest for the best!!

R.I.G rust preventative grease wipe-down every time I take a gun out, or in.

And a base coat Johnson's Paste Floor Wax if foul weather is in the forecast.

Been using WD-40 for as long as I can remember; well over 40 years, and none of my over 40 year old guns are a bit rusty. And they have been drowned in the rain and dunked in salt water and everything else from Chesapeake Bay, to Manitoba, Canada, to Louisiana. As long as you don't wait to clean them you shouldn't have any problems. If you're lazy, get a plastic stocked gun with the metal coated or dipped, and plan to get it regularly recoated/dipped.

Eezox, but it smells bad to me ( I like the smell of Hoppe's ) and contains some carcinogens.

I used to pheasant and duck hunt out around San Francisco bay and Johnson's paste wax did the best job of keeping the rust away. Worked better then CLP or oil.

Yep!

Because it fills the microscopic pores & polishing scratches in the metal.
And it won't wipe off in gun cases or handling, or ever dry out like oil.

Master Blaster, You might not necessary need a film of rust preventer as long as its not like a whole 24 hrs before you can clean you gun. Just make sure you thoughly clean the trigger, action, latching area on your shotgun. I like using a qtip for hard to reach spots.Next follow up with a lightweight oil in those assembly areas just cleaned. Wipe it down afterwards with lightweight oil just so the oil shines on gun. Hope this helps, these are my measures used.

Hands down eezox because it has worked better than anything else i have tried which is to numerous to list.

Yup my grandpa cleaned his 1940 ish model smith and wesson 38 with wd 40 and it gummed the entire gun up the cylinder even locked up. I broke it down and recleaned it in eezox and it was good as new. Your about the only one i have heard of that didnt have gumming problems with wd 40. Not trying to be argumentative but it has been my experience that WD 40 sucks to clean guns with.

I've had excellent results with Johnson's Paste Wax on blued guns. I put a couple of light coats on my blued Mauser and went elk hunting in CO for a week. That gun got hit with rain, sleet and snow, handled temperature changes both fast and slow and didn't develop a speck of rust anywhere.

Eezox is also good. For wiping down for storage try Break Free COLLECTOR.
