Do you have a favorite gun that's slipped under the popular radar? I'm starting this thread because I'm holding my favorite 'sleeper' gun: a Colt Police Positive (this one is a Mk.IV/4th issue/half-underlug/whatever).

I bought it on a whim so I'd have a .38 like my Detective Special--a gun which I couldn't hit the broad side of a barn with. Shooting the Police Positive has really deepened my appreciation for the Colt D-frame, and I'm getting very accurate with both guns now that I really understand the trigger. I have some classic, elegant guns (Hi-Power, 1911), but the D-frame is elegant in a way those guns can't touch.

.38 Special is a great caliber: low recoil, accurate, fits in smallish guns (the D-frame is the perfect size!), and with the FBI load, it's plenty good for self-defense. I prefer to shoot 158gr lead out of the gun, which is getting expensive. Time to start reloading, I guess.

My girlfriend loves it too, and shoots it very well. If you see a young couple smiling and shooting good groups with an old Police Positive, it just might be us!

Hey! The Rem Nylon 66 is my favorite sleeper?

I guess that the AMT DAO Backuo in .45ACP. Simple, reliable with hardball*, and the best point-shooting weapon I have ever used. Oddly enough, I never had a problem with the triggerpull in either aimed fire or point shooting.

* 3" bbl. I don't expect a HP to work as desired.

I would have to say that the one I like that I do not think gets enough credit is my Taurus PT92 AFS. it is a very nice 9mm. It shoots as good as any Beretta 92 model I have ever shot and costs half as much.

I also think the Beretta Tomcat is underrated as a great little carry gun.

Pistols:

I would have to say Bersa Thunder .380 tied with the Makarov

Rifles:

SKS - one of the best defensive rifles for the money

Shotgun: Browning 2000, this was a gun that was ahead of it's time and overshadowed by the Auto-5. It never realy got its day in the sun. I think if it was released 20 years later, it would have been a smash hit.

Rifle: The entire CZ series, thay have it all over most domestically produced guns, but they are starting to catch on.

Rimfire: Thompson Center Classic, The 10/22 doesent even come close in terms of features (from the factory), or craftsmanship. Think limited exposure is one of th major issues holding this gun back.

Sleeper Guns!!!

I have a real fondness for the single stack Fire Stars, in 9mm and 45 acp. They are of very good quality and have been as reliable as the day is long. I have used mine as my primary carry gun in 45 acp for years and feel very comfortable with the idea. :) I'm always looking for another one!!! :)

ruger sp101 in 22 It gets knocked for not having fully adjustable sights but if it shoots right what needs adjusting?

CZ pistols have enjoyed a recent rise in popularity, but still don't have the popularity of lesser guns like the XD or Glock...fine by me.

Also FN's FNP line of polymer autos. The FNP-9 is a great gun.

Smoothbore pistols, aka NFA AOW guns, are legal in NY. Clerk did a double-take when registering a 12-guage handgun.

Anything cZ, but that seems to be changing.
makarov
Heritage .22. I kid you not.
The Beretta 1200 shotgun.
Stevens 311 series.

+1 on the savage 99, pete f. the best lever action design ever built. i don't mind that they aren't as popular as they once were, it means i can buy them cheaper.

1903 Colt Pocket... really accurate and really easy to shoot and oh those lines.

I would have to say my SigPro 2340. Its about 6-7 years old, been through a lot of round and always runs like a champ.

Often people consider it the Bastard Sig, but I love it.

Savage Mark II rimfire, with accutrigger. Shoots incredibly well for the price.

Swiss K-31 carbines. Oddball ammo that's quite similar to .308, terrific trigger, unquestionably the most accurate centerfile rifle for the dollar.
