Stumbled on this this morning while drinking my coffee. It's the FBI's crime statistics website. If you have time take a look at it.

Violent crime and murder is apparently on a steady decline. Take a look at your state and see how its doing. Vermont had the least amount of murders in 2010 with 7. Only 2 of which were committed with firearms. Love my Green Mountain State :)

Hows your state lookin?

Overall violent crime is on the decline, however, it has also shifted to smaller towns. Go back a couple years and compare the data. It's pretty eye-opening.

Whoa, awesome! Thanks for the tip.

If you love stats like that, are you familiar with WISQARS? It's this fantastic database of fatal injury stats, which you can then break down any which way. For example, I'm looking at it now, and it says that accidental poisoning has overtaken motor vehicle accidents as the leading cause of death among Americans age 25-34. (Further digging makes it clear that "accidental poisoning," which has seen a huge rise in the last decade, almost invariably means prescription drugs.)

Religious bias
Of the 1,552 victims of an anti-religion hate crime:

67.0 percent were victims of an offender’s anti-Jewish bias.
12.7 percent were victims of an anti-Islamic bias.
4.2 percent were victims of an anti-Catholic bias.
3.0 percent were victims of an anti-Protestant bias.
0.5 percent were victims of an anti-Atheist/Agnostic bias.
9.1 percent were victims of a bias against other religions (anti-other religion).
3.5 percent were victims of a bias against groups of individuals of varying religions (anti-multiple religions, group).

Haters going to hate apparently. Well I own guns for numerous reasons and the bolded is one.

If you believe those FBI stats during these economic times, don't. It's a politician misdirection of the true facts. More people, less work and everyone is sitting at home hoping for a new handout or job.

And your evidence to invalidate or bring the statistics in questions is?

Ding Ding Ding...we have a winner.
Plenty of articles citing the fact that municipalities are "cooking the books" to show crime reduction. This is nothing new, but is expanding rapidly. Do a Google search.

A number of PDs no longer respond to B&E, burglary, and a variety of other property crimes.

Read up on some of the "Occupy" sites...rapes and assaults are routinely "dealt with internally" and not reported as "crimes", although they are violent crime. This also extends beyond just "Occupy" sites.

Bottom line...lies, damn lies and statistics.

Some sociologists like to believe that the reduction in crime has less to do with gun control and more to do with birth control. Row vs Wade factors in as well. The skinny of it is, fewer "unwanted" babies via birth control/abortion means fewer people that lived in less than desireable circumstances. There fore, they didn't grow up to become criminals who would be at the peak of their criminal activities right now. I'm not saying it's true, I'm just throwing .02 into the coffer.

Don't you go bringing facts into this discussion! Are you one of those factinistas? My gut is all the evidence I need!

LOL! Well, said.

Backwards Thinking = looking for facts to support one's opinion rather than to form it

Violent crime is on the decline.

It is moving out of the cities and into more rural areas however, even if on the decline overall, many places have a dramatic increase because crime once predominantly in the inner cities is elsewhere.

There is a few reasons for this.
One has been massive gentrification in the last 10 years in many major cities.
The housing crisis has helped accelerate the process, because even though its no longer increasing in value as rapidly, those with refinanced mortgages in the housing boom, like many low income in cities with property values that went way up, were hit the hardest. Foreclosure is all but certain for them.
From New York, to Los Angeles, and many cities across the nation, the ethnic and cultural groups that the gang culture made up a subculture of have been moving leaving.
Certain communities simply couldn't afford to live in the city anymore, and moved out. This included the parents of a lot of the gang community, and those older individuals.
They have had to move out of the city and into the less expensive suburban areas and rural countryside. Go anyplace out of the city where there is places like apartment complexes and trailer parks, and other places those who cannot afford a house live and they have become much worse with this influx of former inner city tenants.
However there is still lower population density so even if they bring their troubles with them, they have fewer overall problems.
This is by far the largest downturn in violence in the nation.
The decrease in gang violence almost matches the decrease in violence, making up most or nearly all of its decrease in many cities.

The percentage of decreased violent crime is almost the same as the decrease in gang violence. Gangs are just killing each other less.
Crime outside of that has been relatively stable, but it just makes the overall less and gives an apparent decrease.
Since gang violence primarily targets other gang members, this decrease has a less significant impact on most legal firearm owners.

When it reaches zero I will be impressed, until then it means nothing. It's the same as when your 14 year old daughter tells you she's pregnant but not to worry because all the rest of the girls in her class aren't.
