Violent crime is on the decline.

Overall violent crime is on the decline, however, it has also shifted to smaller towns.
It is moving out of the cities and into more rural areas however, even if on the decline overall, many places have a dramatic increase because crime once predominantly in the inner cities is elsewhere.
There is a few reasons for this.
One has been massive gentrification in the last 10 years in many major cities.
The housing crisis has helped accelerate the process, because even though its no longer increasing in value as rapidly, those with refinanced mortgages in the housing boom, like many low income in cities with property values that went way up, were hit the hardest. Foreclosure is all but certain for them.
From New York, to Los Angeles, and many cities across the nation, the ethnic and cultural groups that the gang culture made up a subculture of have been moving leaving.
Certain communities simply couldn't afford to live in the city anymore, and moved out. This included the parents of a lot of the gang community, and those older individuals.
They have had to move out of the city and into the less expensive suburban areas and rural countryside. Go anyplace out of the city where there is places like apartment complexes and trailer parks, and other places those who cannot afford a house live and they have become much worse with this influx of former inner city tenants.
However there is still lower population density so even if they bring their troubles with them, they have fewer overall problems.
This is by far the largest downturn in violence in the nation.
The decrease in gang violence almost matches the decrease in violence, making up most or nearly all of its decrease in many cities.
The percentage of decreased violent crime is almost the same as the decrease in gang violence. Gangs are just killing each other less.
Crime outside of that has been relatively stable, but it just makes the overall less and gives an apparent decrease.
Since gang violence primarily targets other gang members, this decrease has a less significant impact on most legal firearm owners.
