WASHINGTON (CNN) -- The FBI said Sunday it wants the public's help in finding five men who may have entered the United States illegally within the past week.

The FBI said the names were gathered in ongoing investigations, but said it had no specific information the men were connected to terrorist activities. A caption accompanying photos of the men on the FBI's Web site reads: "War on Terrorism."

The FBI identified the five men as Abid Noraiz Ali, 25; Iftikhar Khozmai Ali, 21; Mustafa Khan Owasi, 33; Adil Pervez, 19; Akbar Jamal, 28.

Sources said that if the men are in the United States, authorities want to know why and to question them for additional leads in the investigation of the al Qaeda terrorist network.

Although the names appear to be Pakistani, officials said they do not know for sure where the men are from, and the FBI said the names and ages may be fictitious.

"The FBI is after these guys because they know something or they are trying to scare them," said Paul Bremer, a member of President Bush's Homeland Security Advisory Council and ambassador at large for counterterrorism in the Reagan administration.

"They [might have] lost track. [They] can be trying to disrupt an operation. [They] could have a number of purposes at once," said Bremer, who heads Marsh Crisis Consulting, a global firm specializing in risk management.

The men may have entered the United States from Canada on or around December 24, the FBI said. Sources said a good chance exists the men had already entered the country by the time the information on them was developed in the past week.

The men were not being tracked, the sources said, and authorities do not know whether they might have crossed the 4,000-mile-long border together or separately.

The FBI said it has been working with homeland security agencies -- including the Customs Service, the Immigration and Naturalization Service and the Transportation Security Administration -- to locate the men.

The FBI has also given information about the men, including their pictures, to 18,000 local and state law enforcement agencies.

Anyone with any information about the group is asked to contact their nearest FBI office. Photographs of the individuals can be found on the FBI's Web site at www.fbi.gov.

CNN correspondents Jeanne Meserve and Suzanne Malveaux contributed to this report.

Well I'm shocked, shocked I'll tell you! The FBI actually seeking the help of all the eyeballs in the country to get a bead on suspects. What will they think of next?

GEEEEEEE! Let me guess! They came from are friends up"NORTH"or from the "Looks" of them? they could be cutting someone "Grass"
We need to cut this BS out and put the Guard on the borders!

OH:eek: I'am so un-pc!

They may be difficult to apprehend since LE can't use an ethnic profile to effect that result.

For every Middle eastern male between rhe ages of 20 and 30 stopped for questioning, The LEOS will certainly have to stop and question teenage anglo females, and senior citizens over the age of 75. WE MUST BE POLITICALLY CORRECT YOU KNOW.

The FBI is helpless it's seven storied tall...What can we do who can we call........

You could march an army over our borders they are so damn open. We can't stop drugs or illegals so how are we going to stop the whackos?

It is laughable!

Since the FBI, the INS, Border Patrol, etc. are all doing such bang-up jobs, how did those 5 get in ? ? ? ?

So, they just want to talk with them. I guess that deserves a nationwide alert. No real problem here.

Law enforcement is only as good as the citizenry allows it to be. Back in the '30s & '40s, LE use to have short flicks that would be shown in the cinemas to advise the citizenry of the most wanted. Didn't see any of it during the '60s or '70s. Recently we've seen the same thing on TV now.

All jokes about the Fan Belt Inspectors set aside, if you spot these dudes, drop a dime.

That's why we need the new "Homeland Security" department. It will be so much more competent!

The biggest single mistake Bush is making in the war on Islamofascist terrorists is he is making it a war for the professional.

"That's right, Mr. Sixpack. We here at government house will fight this war on your behalf. All you have to do is go back to work and keep America strong. How else can we spend all this money if you don't pay taxes, so get back to work and pay them taxes. What's that you say, Mr. Sixpack? Do you really think you have anything to contribute to our war. Look, Bub, it takes experts and specialists and highly trained para military types to defeat the bad guys. You sir have nothing to contribute other than your tax earnings. Get back at it!"

Glad to hear someone realizes 500 million eyeballs are better than a few hundred thousand.
