The FBI and police agencies are on the lookout tonight for a police vehicle stolen in Northwest Washington Friday morning. But that's not all that was taken.

Cindy Pena's Report
Inaugural preparations are in the final stages. Decorations along Pennsylvania Ave. are flying high, while down low man hole covers are searched and sealed.

At the capitol, visitors can still walk up First St. to see the West side of the building but for now, there's no getting closer.

Many people say with security so tight, things seem a lot safer

“ It's a lot more secure than usual, work on 13th street, no drive zone, thought it was a little much, but there's more security, a lot safer.†says Ellen Wray.

With days to go before the world watches American history in the making, police are on guard.

But now there's an additional concern. The FBI is reporting that one of their vehicles was stolen in Northwest Washington on Friday. Inside that car was government issued protective gear like a bullet proof vest. But even more disturbing to some is that a submachine gun is now missing.

“The stolen weapon is an MP5, which is a 9 millimeter submachine gun. The MP5 is specially designed for American law enforcement†says counterterrorism expert Larry Johnson.

According to Johnson “It's a submachine gun, multiple bullets, law enforcement use, cannot walk into local gun store and purchase one of theseâ€.

The FBI says the car, used by an agent from the Washington field office, was stolen from S and 10th streets Northwest, sometime Friday morning.

Because the weapon is now reported missing, police are being urged to approach the vehicle with extreme caution.

Official say the incident is embarrassing, but not a security threat.

A Maryland state police officer put the street value of this weapon at $50,000.

The stolen FBI vehicle is a 1998 4-door black, Ford Crow Victoria, with Virginia tags:
X-Y-Y-7-0-0-5 . If you have information about this stolen car, please contact police.

Who proofread that report? The quotes make the persons interviewed sound like idiots.

And who says the German MP5 is "specially designed for American law enforcement"?

What world is he living in?!?!

A transferable MP-5 is $13K or so, what a joke!

I don't ever remember hearing the MP-5 was designed specificly for the US. Do these guys think before they open their mouths?

According to Johnson “It's a submachine gun, multiple bullets, law enforcement use, cannot walk into local gun store and purchase one of these

We have 2 transferable ones in the safe at work right now. :scrutiny:

50k bucks is the non ffl street barter price

you would think this "news" might make the metro section of the Washington Post,
after all they devote lots of space to the MMM theory that terrorists buy machine guns at gunshows

nope, not a mention

But I thought that you could get evil automatic death weapons from off the street after September 13!

I thought the FBI had 10mm Mp5's?

You know...It was probably some street thug that jacked the car, not realizing it was a Fed's car....probably had NO IDEA there was an smg in the trunk until the news told him so.

$50k for an off the books smg? I don't know.....might not be off the mark.

My thoughts as well. You could probably demand that kind of premium from someone with malevolent intentions who couldn't pass a federal background check and secure permission from his local constable.

For $50,000, I'd sell them mine as a replacement and throw in the suppressor for free.

The fact it cannot be registered is what kills the value. No BG is gonna pay $50,000 for a MP5. Maybe $1000 for some Die Hard fan, but most likely just a few $100.

Lol so there are millions of AK's floating around the world, I think I heard $20 in places like Pakistan, who would sell their house for an mp5?

If someone tried to sell me one I would have to decline becase how the hell would you get parts for it? Steal another car?

Its the transferrability that makes the guns worth more. If you dont care about that, or the fact that the gun is stolen, I would imagine the street price is a few hundred bucks. Probably less considering that most criminals dont want to be caught with a stolen machine gun. My guess would be that it gets smuggled out of the country for its final sale just like most handguns are (handguns are ironically more difficult to get than MGs in some countries).

I personally find the militarization of the police to be disturbing.

hmmmm

>>>I personally find the militarization of the police to be disturbing.<<<

ALL the more reason for us to be better armed..........Get your FN 5.7 and P90 while you can kids!!!! It's gonna be a hell of a ride someday!

:barf:

ps......P90 magazines are showing up at gunstores already for the introduction of the semi P90 for civilian sale sometime in mid July I am told. And that my friends IS from the horses mouth.

:) ;) :D :neener:

I guess thats if you're Tony Montana trying to trade nose candy for weapons, or it was one of Saddam's gold-plated ones.

Kharn

I know this to be false. A friend works in law enforcement, and has dealt with so called 'steal to order' types. The street price for a steal-to-order MP5 is about $5k tops. And that's in LA (hey, everything costs more :).

That's the big secret, stolen/illegal guns always go for less than legal ones. And there's no background check or 4 page forms from Pablo's trunk on East 14th street. Plus, he's open 24 hours.

My money is on some junkie ripping off the unmarked car, didn't even know (or just didn't care) it was a federal vehicle. Had no idea about the MP5

Lastly, I'm much more scared 'security wise' of some guy with a 30 year old scoped Remingon .30-06 deer rifle than I am of any joker with an Mp5.

Weith an effective range of as much as 700yds, there's just no practical realistic protection against deer hunters.

The MP-5 was probably ditched in the Potomac River and the cop car is in a chop shop.

i imagine they are now very carefully checking every
gov't Black Crown Vic driving in DC this week.

Maybe they will issue orange stickers for the cleared ones,
just like they did for the White Vans back in the Sniper daze.

yep, no way ole Al K. Ida has access to orange sticker stock.

Who's to say the Gov doesnt pay 50K for MP5s. Arnt these the same ones who paid $500-600 for toilet seats?

Just because its stolen and not transferable, doesn't mean it won't end up in a private collection somewhere.

Where do ya think all the paintings, jewelry and art go that is stolen from museums and individuals that never turn up?

A criminal not wanting to get caught with a stolen gun.
Now that was funny.
