I have more that 1000 old Federal shotshell primers. These are 209, not the new 209A.
Internet research tells me the new 209A's are much hotter than the old primers.
There really isn't any reloading data now for the old 209's, but the internet tells me that if I want to use them I should use data for Win 209 primers as these are very close to the old Federal's.
What do you think? Is it safe to proceed in this manner?

CAUTION: The following post includes loading data beyond currently published maximums for this cartridge. USE AT YOUR OWN RISK. Neither the writer, The High Road, nor the staff of THR assume any liability for any damage or injury resulting from use of this information.

My Speer manual #8 has data for the old Federal 209, but is really of no help. Hulls and wads have changed over the years.

I would use current Fed 209A data with the Fed 209 primers, but with exceptions.

The 209 may produce less pressure and the powder may not burn correctly.. Some data will use the same components , but 3 different amounts of powder. 3 different pressures. May want to start with the middle loading?

Powders like 700x, Red Dot, should not be hard to light or be a problem. Ball powders may need the hotter primer.

If pressure is to low, a blooper may leave a wad in the barrel. And on firing, it will sound funny/strange.

Lee Q, I would load a few and test for good firing. If they don't work well you might have to find older data for when they were in use.
