Federal... FAIL!

Opened a box of cheap Rem UMC ammo (didn't have enough brass to start reloading for that caliber yet) and one round had a primer seated in sideways and was partially crushed.

A few are always going to get through I guess.

I've got a Springfield XD40 that will shoot any brand of ammo except Federal.

Load it up with Federal and it's a jam-o-matic. For whatever reasons the cartridges jam up hard as they're going into the chamber, and it can only be cleared by dropping the mag. Does it with all my mags and usually 4 or 5 times per mag and it can happen with any cartridge from the first to the last.

No problems at all with any other brands.

Never bothered to do any case measurements or anything like that, just stopped buying Federal for it and have shied away from it in other calibers too.

With any mass produced article there will be a certain percentage of defective items. Considering how many billions of rounds of ammo are produced finding a dud now and then is not only possible, it's a certainty.

Stuff happens. Nobody got hurt. It wouldn't have hurt your gun or you.
You're out about a dime.
Federal might buy you a new box of ammo.

Now you have a good story to tell on the Internet.
