I have to ship a handgun for repair. I know I need to use FedEx or UPS and ship it overnight (according to their policies). My question is, do y'all have a general preference between the two carriers? By the way, I intend to use a larger box that would be harder to conceal by a thief and to address it ATTN: Service Department rather than the manufacturers actual name. Thanks in advance for info to shed light on the better carrier.

Smart Move

You are very wise to ship in a larger box. When I had to ship pistols back to Kimber (no, let's not go there), I packed the pistols in the plastic boxes they came in and then repacked them in slightly larger boxes. I use UPS because their rates are comparable to FedEx and the nearest UPS Distribution Center is closer - only a 50 mile round trip. Please remember to insure your package.

Either place you need to go to the Service Counter either. Not Kinkos nor UPS Store. So, with that said you might want to check which has better hours and location to suit your needs!

I've shipped guns via FedEx from a mail and check place before. They never asked what was inside and I never told them. Is that a problem?

(B8) May a nonlicensee ship a firearm by common or contract carrier?

A nonlicensee may ship a firearm by a common or contract carrier to a resident of his or her own State or to a licensee in any State. A common or contract carrier must be used to ship a handgun. In addition, Federal law requires that the carrier be notified that the shipment contains a firearm and prohibits common or contract carriers from requiring or causing any label to be placed on any package indicating that it contains a firearm.

I just shipped FedEx yesterday. Just like shipping any other package, I just mentioned it was a firearm. She asked whether there was live ammo in it and I said no. That was it.

Also had to go priority overnight. :fire:

The best thing to do is have a gun store ship it for you. They can ship USPS and will be about half the cost of shipping UPS or FedEX. Most will do this if you are shipping for custom work / repair etc.

Note also, you can ship any part of the handgun except the receiver USPS to anyone in the country. Basically, this means you can ship a slide or barrel, if that's all that's broken. Just not the "grip" part of the gun, which is the part that is considered to be a "firearm."

OK... Dumb question:

can you ship a gun to your self? Say i want to ship a gun to my house that is located on my hunting land, but I am going to fly there, and don't want to check it at the airport, as they regularly "misplace" firearms. Can I drop it off at FedEx, fly to my other house, and then receive the package? I ask, because I don't know, but I trust FedEx more than an airline.

I've shipped mine FedEx, mainly because they are open later than UPS. FedEx has been great, no weird looks or comments. Just "Don't worry, we'll take of your baby." :D I thought that was nice touch.

Yes, as you know you have to send all handguns by Overnight, though it does not have to be the First/early bird overnight. I useally use the Fedex Overnight Saver, packages always arrive before 3pm. Good idea on not using the company or better use an abervation. I now ship mostly through FedEx because I get a company discount. I have had equal good and bad experiences with both companies. My old UPS route driver was a cool guy, very professional and also liked guns. I have yet to meet the two different Fedex drivers. FYI, Fedex Ground is an independent service, use to be RPS, they (the drivers unlike the Express and UPS counter parts are independent operators who lease their trucks from Fedex) useally based out of a regional terminal a long distance from their route and they are not allowed to carry Express packages.

The local Fedex agent is more cordial than the bozos at the UPS depot, so I go that way. Expensive, though.
My FLD will do the USPS form for me if I take it to the post office. I have done that but the dollar savings versus dealing with hysterical postal clerks is a tough tradeoff decision to make.
