What I don't get is why didn't Fedex realize the problem earlier. Fedex has very good tracking of packages in their possession. Wouldn't it seem suspicious that a particular facility was losing a lot of packages from a particular sender. Moreover, these packages contain firearms.

two white males were selling handguns at three different public housing complexes, the complaint stated.
Selling 75 guns in the projects or trading for drugs. I'm surprised these guys are still alive.

Maybe they were shipped as.....machine parts....

Thernlund:

"Good grief.

This is so bad for us (the law-abiding gun owners)."

How so? This was from a manufacturer to a distributor? I don't understand the connection. The people complaining (from the way I read it) were residents from the projects.

The argument of the antis will be, "if we just outlawed shipment of guns this sort of thing wouldn't happen...", or something equally stupid. The Bradyites and VPC folks can find a silver lining in just about any cloud that looks dark to gun owners. The idea that stealing guns and selling them is illegal anyway makes no difference to the antis - especially so in NJ. :cuss:

I'd think that maybe 5 years/gun stolen would be a fair time in the lockup. Even with time off for good behavior they could be locked up for a LONG time.... That'd be cruel and unusual though I suppose.

It's absolutely amazing that in the state of NJ one can get 5 years for each magazine over 15 rounds, but a crime of actual significance is going to get a slap on the wrist.
Nah - you can only get up to 3 years per magazine... 4th degree crime. Now... if those magazines happen to be loaded with hollowpoint rounds... ooh, can that start to add up! :)

But in all seriousness, it is patently ridiculous that these criminals are only facing up to 5 years in prison, whereas a legal gun owner in NJ, if transporting a pistol to a range and stops for a cup of coffee, can face up to twice that amount of time. He's not putting illegal guns out on the street, where they WILL be used to kill people - he's getting his morning coffee, while his legally purchased, registered, unloaded, and locked pistol sits in his locked trunk, not hurting or intending to hurt anyone.

Calling Bryan Miller.... please explain THAT one to me.

Gee, why don't they require that guns be shipped overnight, so that the employees don't have time to steal them? Oh, wait... nevermind.

How did the thieves know which packages contained firearms? Are they marked on the outside as firearms or can any employee look up the declared contents of any package? Seems like there must be a more secure way for fedex to handle firearms.

The Ex- FedEX boys will stacking boxes at Club Fed now. Better not bend over to pick up the soap, dudes.
As Forest Gump said: Stupid is as Stupid does.

Just think, "inside job" thefts are why we have to pay a premium to send guns by the "next day air" service. :banghead: If I didn't know better I would say this is a form of protection racket.

I'll second that. I wouldn't drive there in the day light with a 50 on the roof.

Wow talk about dumb thieves. How could he possibly swipe a box of 75 handguns and not think that someone is going to notice that in a big hurry? I would guess the importer immediately reported the shipment as missing, and given the sensitive nature of the contents a few alphabet soup agencies would have gotten involved right away.

In the IT department where I work we've had quite a lot of stuff stolen by employees of the shipping companies. A few years ago we ordered a bunch of new laptops and several of them arrived with no laptops in the box but instead contained stuff like handtruck tires and various other "ballast" you might find laying around a shipping depot.

Jersey City residents complained to police in May that two white males were selling handguns at three different public housing complexes, the complaint stated.
So... the complaint is that the gun-sellers were white? :p
