Anybody? I know people got them, at least I see lots of pictures of them anyway

What happened to my orginal thread it just went away like magic.
Anyways I was looking for what others thought of the Eotech 512

Good as it gets for close range fast shooting.

My 511 has been flawless on an AR Colt carbine.

I've even shot some pretty nice groups at 100 yards with the gain turned way down.

FYI. I had one on my M1A socom. I left the batteries in it and they leaked and the acid ate the plastic around the batteries. So you guys might want to remove the batteries when not using it.

More details, please.

Cheap batteries or good name brand? (Duracell, Energizer, or k-mart store brand?)

Were the batteries new and fully charged when installed? Or grabbed them out of a tv remote or flashlight when necessity called?

Does the unit run new batteries down to zilch in a few days or weeks? or do they hold a charge well over a few months but you discovered the corrosion/leakage after leaving it unattended for a longer time than that?

Storage conditions - climate controlled house inside dehumidified safe, car that is alternately searing hot and then freezing cold - beach house with humid salty air?

What series is your 512 (date of manufacture) - there have been several in-production revisions and from what I've heard it makes a difference.

Not criticizing you at all, just wanting more data to draw some reasonable conclusions.

The energizer batteries that came with the Eotech. Mine wasn't the regular AA model I think they were the Lithiums. It ate and softened the plastic around batteries terminals and coroded the metal. The black stuff on the top of the battery is some of the plastic.

Mine was > 2 years old and no longer under warranty so I was going to have to foot the bill to get it fixed.

I left them in the eotech on the rifle in the gun locker. Inside the apartment at room temp.

That does not look good !!

What kind of changes have they made ???

The instructions do say not to leave batterys in them during long-term storage.

You can't really blame EoTech for a well known alkline battery problem.

What about the newer 516? I understand it uses the CR123 batteries, same as my TLR-1 light. Would that version be more beneficial using those type batteries? The body appears to be taller than the other two battery type versions, can anyone with firsthand experience verify this?
Also where's the best place to buy a 516 eotech?

I have a 552 on one of my AR 15s and it is fun to shoot. It keeps me on target at 100 yards.

I am going to check the batteries right now.

I think you got the model numbers mixed up. Your top link is for the 553. The 516 is a new model that is non NV and is 7mm higher in the base to make it co-witness in the lower third of the window. Bravo Company has them listed for $439.00 but not in stock at this time. The CR123 batteries have a listed life of 1100 hours, far more than the N type batteries.

I haven't found anywhere that has them in stock at this time. They may not be released yet. I am going to call Bravo Company and EOTech on Tuesday to see if I can get a date for them. I will let everyone know what I find out.

I have owned a 512 rev f for the past 3 years and it have served me well on my AR. The only gripe I have with Eotechs are there fact that battery life is short compared to a Aimpoint. With an AP you could leave it turned on and the batter would last forever. However, the ET would drain the battery. I wish they made the ET with a auto shut off feature. I went with the AA battery version because it is easier to find AA batteries than N-batteries. I reserve my N batteries for my surefires.

Far as I know, all EOTech's do have an auto shut-off feature.

If you turn them on with the left (get dimmer) button, they auto shut-off after four hours.

Turn them on with the right (get brighter) button and they auto shut-off after 8 hours.

Ok I have a question, from comments in this thread it says you should remove the batteries for storage. If you remove the batteries will it you lose your zero?

I never remove my batteries, I just don't see the point. If you need your rifle right away, the last thing you need to do is to install batteries...most likely in the dark and in a confined space.

rmodel is correct that a Eotech does have a auto shut off, I tried it last night and it did shut off automatically.

No!
The battery compartment has nothing at all to do with the mount or the zero.

There is a cam lever on the top front of the sight.
Flip it up and the battery compartment slides forward off of the sight.

Dump the old battery's, slide two fresh ones in, slide the cover back on, and push the latch down.

Takes all of 30 seconds and you are back in business.

BTW: I also leave my battery's in all the time.
I treat them like a smoke detector battery.
Replace them on a set schedule, at least once a year, and they will not run down, leak, and corrode.

They will also be fresh & work when you hear a bump in the night!

I wasn't meaning that you had to remove it or take it apart and that might lose your zero I was just curious that since it is a electrically powered device if you remove the juice will it lose the memory ie. the zero?

I thought Energizer would replace anything damaged by a battery they make that leaks?

It used to be that way. I don't know about now though.

Get a 55X series. They are a lot more durable than the 51X series...I have already seen a bunch of 512's crap out (in Afghanistan).

Mac Attack
I reserve my N batteries for my surefires.
Surefire doesn't take size N. They do however take c123's which is a higher capacity 3volt lithium wheres N is an 1.5volt high capacity (if you call alkaline high capacity) alkaline.

If you are goimg to get an Eotech eithier get the AA or C123's both are easy to obtain.

If you get the C123's just a word of advice either get name brands from the Store or order them from sure fire which is the cheapest.

I purchased a small lot off off e-bay once and had one of the batteries blow up in my light in my pocket. Sounded like a shootgun in the cab of my truck. blow the rubber off the tail cap and blow the light out. Surefire fixed it for free and put new batteries in it.

I wouldn't want that to happen while I was looking through my eotech.

No; the zero is mechanical, not electronic. Killing the circuit (removing batteries) doesn't affect zero in any way...only changing the mount will affect zero.
