FEG PA-63: sharing the joy - see pics!

I am going to order grips from marschal. I know I want to get the short grips but I haven't decided on wood. I am debating black stained walnut or Purpleheart. If I get the walnut I know I wanted checkered. If I get the Purpleheart, I don't know if I want checkering. What do you guys think?

Black Stained Walnut

Purpleheart (would want short grips though)

If we're voting, I say go with the black, checkered walnut. No offense to anyone else, but the smooth purpleheart grips combined with the aluminum frame make the gun look like a cheap, chinese air pistol.

Nice example, btw. I would be interested in buying a new one if I could get over the extra FFL hassle.

My own PA-63

Have to agree with you about the grips Gloob... I've never liked smoothe wooden grips of odd colors. It makes guns look like toys.

I bought a PA-63 last weekend at a local gunshop in reasonably new condition. I shot it today for the first time, and it has more recoil than my Makarov with the same ammo, and isn't nearly as accurate. Of course, it could be a loose nut behind the hammer, but the grip and line of sight are slightly different from the Mak, so it may just take some time to get used to it. I did better shooting it without engaging my little finger on the grip as well, so there may be a learning curve to shooting this puppy.

There's a gun show in town tomorrow, so I'm going shopping for toys to trick out all my guns. I'll be looking for clips for my FEG and a Beretta .380 Model 70S Garcia, so tomorrow is more of a "parts shopping" trip than anything.

Being an older guy with fading eyes and cataracts, the sight pattern on the PA-63 sucked pond water today. Where I could aim the Makarov easily, the PA sight line was a little hard to pick up against a black background target. It wasn't too hard against the orange stick-ons, but anything that was dark let the front sight fade into oblivion.

I probably need to order spring kits for both the PA and the Mak to keep from damaging the frames. Apparently, the 9X18 ammo wears out the stock springs and starts slamming the slide into the frame on both guns, so like everything else in my life... If I'm satisfied with it, I need to spend money to keep it that way.

I shoot a lot, and like the 9mm ammo, but especially the 9X18. It's a hot round, and costs less than shooting .380's (unless you're reloading), and I haven't found a .380 yet that wasn't too small for the amount of recoil that you get from the shell. I've got a Beretta 70S and a LLama Minimax, and both of them are a handful to shoot if you're doing "consecutive fire" (double taps) and aren't as accurate as the Mak.

I was pretty accurate with the PA-63 today, but like I said, I think it has a "learning curve" attached to it's self defense shooting skills. All medium and small automatics have their own minds, and don't necessarily fall in line with any particular ammo until you find something that works consistently... and buying ammo at Wally World, you might not find anything consistent. I know that their .380 ammo is Remington one week, CCI the next, and something else the next. I don't think I've found them to have the same kind or manufacturer on the shelf two weeks running since I bought either gun.

I tend to lean on my SR-9 and Smith 4006 for self defense, but I like these little "sissie pistols" to fight my way to my bigger guns. PA-63's are selling for $129 on the internet, and I just missed a special for them at $99, so I already know I paid too much for mine, and will probably have to spend more on it... so it's losing ground as a "favorite" quickly. I do like the way it feels in your hand, and I'm sure as I shoot it more, it's going to gain back some favor... but for right now, it's an "across the room" only gun... although it did cycle well and was pretty accurate at 15 yards.

this thread is just what i needed...

i went to the local gun show last weekend looking for one and passed up on 3 beat up and overpriced PA63's then went on gunbroker.com and ended up winning one for alot less and even better, it was LIKE NEW- Never Issued!

so i will checkin in for advice on here pretty soon cuz, ya see, im a tinkerer too :) im already planning on the spring kit and the thumb rest will not live long, i see a Hand-all Jr in my future... i should have asked for a dremel tool 4 my b-day.... :p

btw, Gloob, very nice work. the vid really shows how smooth u have it working

say, where do u guys get ur 9x18 ammo from? im leary of the russian stuff beacuse ive heard laquer build up is a pain... u guys ever had any probs with it ?

Hogman

I shoot Silver Bear. It's zinc coated and no build-up issues. Also polymer coated Wolf is fine too. Just replace the recoil and hammer spring (I'd tell you what I did to mine but I forgot!)

thanx wizzegun, mind if i ask where u get your silver bear and wolf from?

what about barnaul? (not the bears, i know barnaul makes them too) but brown bear is laquered

I have been using the blue box Monarch from Academy with great results. It looks and runs about the same as Wolf military classic. Think I paid $6.95/box of 50.. One thing about the PA63, never had a failure at all. I replaced springs and and its been perfect. My wife even can operate it and she says, "It looks soooooooooo pretty!!!"

First semi-auto I ever purchsaed for myself. (I inherited a few first.) That's why I use the name FEG. The PA-63 is the only pistol I ever regret selling.

A well maintained PA-63 is more than adequate for the task with either Barnaul or Sellier & Bellot ammunition.

The only people that I have ever found that didn't like these pistols were stubborn oxes who: 1) refused to replace the springs with the Wolff Gunsprings kit; and 2) refused to shoot anything but the overpowered Wolf 105 gr FMJ. That's a brutal combination.

I picked one of those up last year. After a set of springs and a new set of grips, it was OK. It's dependable, but was relegated to "truck gun" status not long after I was satisfied with its performance.

Someone locally was selling one today, price - 250
said he saw one at a local shop for 350

yeah i passed up on a few at the gun show recently... 225, 275 & 299, altho they dropped the 299 down to 225, they were all all used and scuffed up

got one off gunbroker and paid 175 everything included (shipping transfer etc) and its basically new, never issued. for that price its gonna live in the glovebox untill im done tinkering, then i buy another beater gun, get my FEG some marschal grips and let her sleep in the house... its a vicious circle :D

theres alot of them on the auction sites and the average price is approx 140-180. anybody who pays 200+ paid too much IMO

hopefully ill have it by middle of next week... then i'll start asking questions lol

Ok, two "why the hells".

1) Why the hell did you modify the hammer spring when you hadn't even fired it? Now, you get to see what you screwed up.

2) Why the hell in your video do you hand load a round into the chamber and then close the slide? You're asking for a broken extractor doing that.

Maybe you need a little more firearms training.

yeah, my pa-63 is in the mail, plan on range testing it on Sat... anyone know a good place to buy 9x18 ammo online?

i might use it for CCW when i get my license... what yall think

"I can't wait to see what's inside of a Makarov, when I can finally find one."

The Mak has some very interesting engineering in it. For instance, where the average handgun has a hole through two parts and a pin for them to swivel on the Mak has an integral pin cast into the part, and where the hole is it has a cutout so you can rotate the "pin" and install it through the cutout. Small parts appear to be cast to my eyes, but could be MIM.
There are other imaginative engineering details too. My opinion of the gun is that it is interesting for the reasons stated, but too big and heavy for CCW carry for me in that caliber. Mine is .380, but I've read that the ballistic differences between the two calibers is not very great. In short, there are a lot of smaller and lighter .380's out there.
I also have a P-64, but no P-63, as I don't like aluminum in my guns.

dammit, i didnt realize the 5 day wait also applied to online purchases. seems unfair since ive already been waiting over a week. it arrived at my dealer today and when call i find out the waiting period begins when i fill out their paperwork. oh well, live and learn. guess it will be another week before i can take it to the range. i did get to take a hands-on look at it tho, it is definatly new/unissued and its definatly going to need some polishing but i like a challenge. i just hope i can do as good as Gloob did

having to wait 5 more days has made me decide to get my ccw before i buy another gun, the good thing is my pa-63 should be fine tuned by then so i already have my carry peice. just gonna have to spring for a holster and some marschal grips...

anyone know a good IWB holster for a pa-63?

i guess i overpaid for mine at 225, but i was going to buy the sccy 9 (skyy) new for 300 untill i heard all the horror stories about their spontanious self destruction as well as the funky hole where the hammer should go, leaving a place for dirt and crap to go right inside. I LOVE this pa-63 it is a dream to shoot and feels great in my hand. I have a hi point c-9 (up for sale) and it is a top heavy piece of junk. Although it shoots good, it is bulky and cumbersome and only holds 8 rounds.not at all good for concealed.
i think overall i am very pleased with the little makarov. i just wished i would have done some research first cause i could have drove the price down a little. it did come with a tactical holster and box of free shells though so i guess it wasnt that bad of price huh.

Hey, Hondaboy, if you need any help with the PA-63 let me know, Ive done some spring work to it, added grips and carry it regularly. Its a great, no frills, small gun but its accurate and if you take care of it it wont fail you. Good luck and enjoy!

I almost bought one because the two tone is great looking but the sights are very small... I went with a second CZ 82 instead. I also read that these guns kick like mules; is that true?

i actually like the kick on this thing it is a straight back kick with very little muzzle rise. its not bad at all compared to my 9mm's they ris alot making second shot recovery slow but this pa-63 i can double tap no problem. as far as grips go i like the stock black ones. i might add a hogue hand all jr to it, it did wonders for my crappy hi point c-9!

maybye its just me but i dont care for the mixed colors of wood on silver with a black slide. if the slide were chromed or the aluminum was powdercoated black it would look great with wood grips. iwannasee's feg grips are the best so far because of how dark the grain is. personally i like the grip to match the slide.

Hondaboy you didn't get beat up over the deal you got the ammo and holster. I paid 190 w/ two box's of ammo, great little gun to shoot it kicks so I ordered a 15# wolf spring that came in today so I slapped it in and it helped like the guys on this forum said it would.

Maks are just way cool and very high quality for what they cost. I want one if I can find one when I have the money to spend. Could have gotten one of the adjustable sight .380s a while back, but I'd rather have a service model in 9x18. The PA63s have always interested me. I am very impressed with my son-in-law's mak, very accurate and reliable. Thanks for the post.
