FEG PA-63: sharing the joy - see pics!

I gotta get my PA 63 to the range next week when I go out. That was my 1st carry gun, but since I got my .45 and .357 I don't carry it much any more. I need to get the slide refinished as well. It got a little rusty on me at one point. I think I will parkerize it at some point.

Well, here's a vid of how it's done.

Reassemby text instructions
1. Insert firing pin.
2. Push the safety partially in
3. Depress firing pin, and insert safety just far enough to hold firing pin captive
4. Drop the BB into it's hole; it should just have enough room to slide by the safety and roll into it's hole. Don't worry; it's too big to fall all the way through the ejector hole!
5. Push safety all the way in.
6. Put the ejector spring/plunger back in, through the ejector side of the hole
7. Turn the ejector plunger roundside out, flatside in.
8. Push the ejector back in.
9. Make sure the plunger pops over the end of the ejector.

2 detents on safety. The "BB" presses against these slots to hold it in place.

I softened one edge of each slot - the edge facing the other slot, for the obvious reason.

Gloob

For some reason I missed this until just today. I felt the need to thank you for responding to my request so you know I wasn't just plain rude. Thanks you for this video! I didn't see this and had figured it out already but I'm sure others will benefit from it. Where is the reassembly video?

I did some dremeling on my safety detent slots as well. I didn't go nearly as deep and wide as you. I produced some results but not quite as good as I'd like. I may have to go in and do a little more grinding after seeing yours.

How is the safety lever grind working out, are you still happy you did that?

Are we going to have to take up a collection and get you a bottle of Oxpho Blue so you can protect some of the bare metal? :neener:

Like it. No regrets. You should see what I did to the back strap. Also happy with that.

Protect? I thought bluing was purely cosmetic! :)

Sorry, but the US-theme inlets on the grip of a PA-63 is totally out of style for me.

These grips are more Hungarian:

The most desirable (collector) version is the factory-hardchromed one with white grips. This was given for some high-ranked officers anno.

Where'd you get that GRP9 and grips? That's awesome! My dad was born and raised in Hungary, I'd love to get him one of those.

A note about 9X18 ammo:
Fiocchi makes FMJ 9X18 rated at 267 ft lbs, more than anyone else's by quite a bit. It's cheap, too.

Where can you get it cheap? I haven't seen any ammo cheap in the last year. Please send me a PM with a link to it if it breaks any forum rules.

Really nice job on the FEG, and really nice video. Both FEGS - nice looking pistols. I have recently purchased a makarov and find them to be fabulous shooters, very reliable, and ammo is currently cheap. Mine was an unused pistol, and didn't need any deburring. I've seen a bunch of new pistols which needed deburring though.

Here is mine. Polished up the frame a little and put in Wolf springs. Got it way back in 1992.

I just picked up a PA-63 myself. Got some Wolff springs and all that jazz.. What I REALLY want to know is where did these grips come from? I'm a 1st gen. American, but I'm 100% Hungarian. I got the Hungarian crest just like this one as a tattoo on my back to prove it. Anybody at all have any info on these grips? Level of want is EXTREMELY high!

Thanks in advance for any info...

Thanks Gloob.
i watched your video and did the safety job, now it works great, however my pa-63 has a small pin instead of a BB? anyway i got it done thanks to you. i did not know how to remove the safety etc. so do you have a video of how to replace the spring sets? thanks Ron

iwannasee,

What kind of wood and finish do you have on those grips. They are very nice!

I had one for a while until someone offered me a deal I could not refuse ( more that I paid for it). I found that changing the springs made a world of difference in the way it shot. I did read on a Makarov web site that you shouldn't shot the larger grain 9x18 bullets in because of the aluminum frame. Mine shot great with the lighter bullets.

As iwannasee said, they will run without an extractor as will most blowback designs,
making then more reliable than the new crop of locked breech .380s. It's bigger than
an LCP, but I believe the design is more reliable than a LCP, P3AT(any thing is more reliable than a Keltec), or any of the new ultra small .380's.

I wish I still had mine, maybe I can convince a friend of mine to sell me his.

Parkerized PA-63

Well, I used my PA-63 as a guinea pig to see if I could parkerize. I think it came out pretty good. The dark shade is very similar to the original bluing, except it's matte.

I spent under $20.00 for the solution and the steel wool. I didn't sand blast or boil anything. I degreased with dish soap and hot tapwater. I prepped with HCl and steel wool. I diluted the brand name zinc phosphate solution by eyeball, using hot tap water rather than distilled. I nuked it in a tupperware container with the slide and all. No sparks or flames, and my microwave didn't melt. So basically, I half-asked it all the way around. The way I did it, the entire process can be done in 30-45 min, start to finish, in your kitchen. Now I just have to wait and see how well it holds up?

I parked just the slide and the safety lever. They came out totally different colors, for some reason. You can see a close up of the grip frame reduction I did in the second pic.

It looks like the stuff I bought was specifically marketed as a base parkerizing for the Duracoat process. It says Lauer Custom Weaponry, Duracoat Products, Zinc Phosphate Solution on it. It was cheap!

Yeah, I have since figured out that some previous owner must have lost the pin and replaced it with a ball bearing. I turned a new pin from a nail and hardened the point.

For you gentlemen who are having problems with the safety and de-cockers working smoothly: Go to Midway USA and get some "Gun Butter", this stuff is the cat's pajamas! I got a Beretta 1935 .32 auto about 6 weeks ago, it had been awhile since a good cleaning. After cleaning, I put some GB on the safety/slide release, slide and trigger components, it now works like slick hot butter! You don't need but a touch of it on the slide, its made of synthetic oils, and man do they work wonders!! Try this stuff, you'll be amazed!
