Ok, so my Rifle class at school has started. We are shooting these nifty Feinwerkbau air guns. I love the thing, and wouldn't mind one. However, something about a precision Obendorf airgun screams expensive to me.

How much do these things cost, and where can I find one? I believe the model number of the ones we are using is 300. Also, if they are expensive, is there a cheaper alternative that is similiar? I really liek the side cocking lever over any other airgun action I have tired.

Yikes.....don't get me started ;)

My wife is getting into being a competitive air pistol and 1911 shooter (yeah, yeah....I know) and now that she has her 1911 has been hinting that she needs her own air pistol so that the grips fit correctly. Fortunately she can use the ones at work for the time being.....

I had no idea how expensive those things were until i started looking last Christmas :what:

I guess you won't be able to settle for a Red Ryder or a Crossman, huh? :neener:

I have an old FWB-65 pistol that I used to shoot in competition.

Are they expensive? Yes when it comes to buying one, although I would check to see if I could find a used one (rifle or pistol).

But look at it this way. It is built to last several lifetimes, and stand up to the kind of use serious shooting competitors at the International/Olympics level give their guns. From a practice perspective you can't buy less expensive ammunition, you can easily set up a range in your home (I have on occasion practiced in a motel room), and air is free (at least until the government finds out about it. :D ).

A match-grade airgun doesn't really cost more then a similar and equal quality .22 rifle, and sometimes less.

Think of it as an investment, and consider what difference it will make your marksmanship skills.

When I bought my Feinwerkbau I got a steal on an older model (I think it is a 300S or something like that...it's not near me at the moment). The side-cockers are yesterday's technology as the format of Smallbore games has changed to include prone and because of that, side cockers force the shooters to break postition. After the change, compressed air guns became the new rage so side cockers dropped in price. If you don't plan to compete in 4 position but rather just want an accurately shooting air gun, a side cocker would be great. I think I bought my FWB 300 for around $350 with sights, targets, a thousand pellets and a pellet trap. However, I think I got a steal because I'm a match shooter (Highpower) and the seller was too, and he wanted me to have it as a training aid. I don't know what someone else might have to pay.

Good luck! :)

Ouch, my suspicions were just confirmed. I guess $350 isn't too bad, but 4 digits is completely out of the question. Even if it is worth it (and seeing them advertised at .04" accuracy, my guess would be that it is), that is still quite a bit of money.

Is there any CZ452-type guns, someone that offers guns that don't quite hold with the top ones, but shoot nearly as good for a fraction of the cost?

When I bought my Beeman 400 the FW 300s was the competitor. I have often wondered if I should not have saved a few bucks and gotten a 300s instead.

I agree though, the compressed gas guns have taken the old side cockers like mine out of the competition.

jefnvk,

I bought a used FWB 300S for my daughter. Think I paid $425 for it. Great rifles.

There are inexpensive match-oriented airguns on the market, but if you want the good stuff, you're going to pay for it.

Pretty much all the airgun companies make some sort of entry-level match-style guns that incorporate some of the common features found in the top-level guns.

Here's one example:
