Clerk Kills Would-Be Robber Who Grabbed Daughter

Published October 19, 2011 | Associated Press

NAPLES, Fla. – Sheriff's officials in southwest Florida say a clerk at a 24-hour food store shot and killed a man who tried to rob her and take her 1-year-old daughter.

Store owner Del Ackerman told the Naples Daily News (http://bit.ly/rnKaJe ) his granddaughter shot the man after he stormed into the store Tuesday afternoon and demanded money and grabbed the stroller that held her baby.

Is there a discussion here? It's on topic if there is a specific discussion point otherwise it's just a news article with the word gun in it.

It's the kind of news story we like to see, let's discuss it.

Saw this on Yahoo this morning.

THIS is the poster child for expanded Carry, concealed or Open, don't care.

Your life is yours to live or lose, as are those whom you have taken the responsibility of raising to adulthood.

My wife, sister and Mother have been carrying so long that none of them even think about it. I know not one of the three would hesitate seeing something like that happening. Good for the young mom. It would be cool to hear about how and when she began carrying.

Ok, to keep this on Gun related topics....

What would it take to get this woman to a PR person in the NRA or any funded organization to act as the face of how absolutely normal people should be exercising their rights to defend themselves in the most appropriate way?

Or would that question mandate a trip to the Activism page under "Recruit this person as an activist, SOMEONE!!"

I can see some commercial gain from this, especially from the gun and ammo makers - "easy to use, penetration, blah, blah" -that might help more women get over the fear a lot seem to have about recoil

Good for her, we need more like her out there

Seriously, do it all in the open so no-one can complain...

Give her $50,000, stating explicitly in the contract that her experience will be deliberately exploited (yes, go there before the anti's would) as a tool to demonstrate that gun owners aren't raving lunatics.

Don't even have to have her say something.

Eh. Not sure I agree with you, Dnaltrop. She might make a good poster child or face of the average person just using the tools we should all have to defend ourselves, but I think it could be argued (and argued well) that taking this approach is pretty unnecessary, maybe even detrimental.

We all know these situations could happen. They do happen, all the time, and we don't always hear about it. In this case, we did. Not much more to say about it, imo. Hopefully she shares her story with people to promote "Pro-2A" awareness, but I think making a marketing campaign out of it is the wrong move.

There's a lot of women around my area arming themselves lately. I don't remember the organization name, but they're basically a group of mothers that formed a concealed carry support group. I can see this sort of thing being a perfect example to a mother of why she would want to conceal carry. It's not just self-defense, it's family-defense.

Also, in a lot of these cases, I tend to feel that it's a shame the other person had to die... In this case though, I'm thankful he got what he deserved before he got through the door.

A different article...
TAMPA, Fla. (AP) — A convenience store manager grabbed a gun from under the counter and shot a would-be robber in the knee before the man scooped up the clerk's infant daughter and tried to flee, sheriff's deputies said Wednesday.

Daniel Ramont Hernandez, 32, died at hospital after the Tuesday afternoon shooting at Del's 24-Hour Food Store in Naples, according to the Collier County Sheriff's Office. The child wasn't hurt.

Hernandez came in store acting erratically, causing 22-year-old manager Elizabeth Easterly to be worried for her safety, according to the sheriff's office. When Hernandez came around to her side of the counter, she grabbed a gun and shot him once in the leg.

When she ran outside to alert a school crossing guard, Hernandez grabbed the stroller with Easterly's child and carried it toward the door. He put the stroller down, ran outside and was tackled by another man who was coming to work, the report said.

The shooting is still under investigation.

Easterly's grandfather, store owner Del Ackerman, said she was alone briefly during a shift change with her daughters, ages 1 and 2, when the man came in at about 3 p.m.

"I'm so thankful God saved my granddaughter and my grandbabies, because this guy was really vicious," Ackerman said.

His granddaughter had taken a training course in which she was taught to shoot a person in the legs to disable them, he said.

Easterly was not hurt but was shaken up.

"She's pretty much in shock, but she saved the baby," said Easterly's grandmother, Nancy Ackerman.

Calls to her cellphone rang unanswered Wednesday.

Del Ackerman said his family has run the store continuously for 47 years. It was closed while deputies processed the crime scene, but reopened at about 2 a.m. Wednesday.

"I'm not going to let one person in the United States close my doors," he said.

Hernandez has a lengthy arrest record in Collier County dating back to at least 2002, the sheriff's office said.

Naples is about 170 miles south of Tampa.

Heh, at first I thought she just missed, but apparently she's taking a training course that trains to shoot the legs.

Honestly, why not a marketing campaign in the vein of the Armed citizen?

Don't glorify it, give the people who end up having their still or whatever image used due compensation for the hassle invariably mixed with the public spotlight.

Not just her, It happens all over the nation. It happens across all walks of life, and sometimes the right person comes out on top.

The real trick is getting the 5 or 10 second clip into channels other than the Outdoor channel.

Good for her. As crazy as this world is getting its nice to see a normal person come out on top. As soon as I saw this post I showed it to my wife. She has had her CPW about 6 months now and I show her these reasons for getting it every chance I get. Hope the NRA sees this and uses it.

she grabbed a gun and shot him once in the leg

Likely the femoral artery. Ever seen Black Hawk Down? I've actually seen a vid of a guy in either South America or the middle east who got shot in the leg twice (point blank) with a G3. Bled out in under 3 minutes. Nasty stuff.

True love is arming your spouse and turning your back on them 7th Cav ;)

Just watch the news with her, point out articles here and there, and if she's not a shooter, always keep the door open for her to join you for a range trip. My wife went from not anti, but afraid (years of living in the middle of what was then a really bad area) to joining me , but sitting in the car... to trying a rifle, then running to the car... to shooting my old man's model 10 .38 like Annie Oakley.

Waiting on her CHL paperwork appointment now, she's had the certification for a while now, but other licensing (unrelated to firearms) has taken precedent till now.

If this store was owned by someone other than family, she would be on the street looking for work now, sad to say.

"Easterly, 22, and her husband run the store for her grandfather"

Do we know if the gun was concealed on her, or just behind the counter? What kind of pistol? Caliber? Inquiring minds want to know. Oh wait, that's.....

Semi related, but if you were fired from your job because you used a gun to defend yourself, how would that affect you when you look for a new job?

Good question. Do you mean your state of mind of your potential employers?

What would you tell your potential employer when you are doing a job interview? It could work against you, that's for sure.

That one Walgreens (I think) employee got fired for using a gun to defend himself.
