Ohio, and proud of it (for now)
My sister, who lives in the Sacramento, CA area, is considering buying a handgun for personal protection. She has, to my knowledge, never fired a pistol or revolver in her life and knows little to nothing about guns.

Can anyone reccomend a gun retailer in the Sacramento area where such a person would recieve respectful treatment and genuine help for her needs?

Too bad she's not in Austin. She could go to McBrides. They are a little pricey but they are very respectful and helpful. Mrs McBride and her daughter work in the store. The daughter teaches CHL classes.

River City Gun Exchange
Address: 2358 Fruitridge Rd, Sacramento, CA 95822
Phone: (916) 428-0377

Have her ask for Dave, Ben, Jim or Paul. I've seem them help lots of new shooters. Its were I picked up my first handgun, rifle and shotgun.

The Gun Room in Elk Grove is also a good place. Mike is great about helping new shooters

Stay away from Badjer John's Hunting Stuff my experiences there have not been the greatest.

I think your best bet would be River City Gun Exchange on 2358 Fruitridge Rd.

Now since I'm male I have no idea how they treat women but every person I've met working there was open, honest and courteous. They have pretty good deals as well.

But first I'd really recommend your sister get educated before she goes over there. I'd plunge through the archives of TFL and THR to get some idea of what she'd like. A knowledgable consumer will always get better service.

Unfortunately in terms of training in the basics, I don't know of any place to go to, but if you'd like I can recommend some nice ranges.

Another vote for Jeff and Mike at the Gun Room in Elk Grove.

They also have an brand new indoor range - have not been there, but bought several form them at the old location.

The Gun Room

Another vote for the Gun Room. Not only are they friendly to women, they have been very welcoming to our Pink Pistols group. Mike even shoots with us most of the time.

BTW, if this sister would like an inexpensive way to get a little experience with a handful of different guns to find out what she likes, have her contact me at [email protected]. We're friendly, and won't care that she's straight (if she is). Happy to do what I can to give folks a leg up on shooting skills and information.

It's not in Sacramento, but Montana Hawk in Cotati, CA. has always been very profesional, curious, and friendly.

They take lots of pride in guiding their customers well (they have a list of guns they won't sell, usually little cheap things that are unreliable in their opinion for defense.)

Depending on who you ask, they'll probally set you up with a Glock, a Kimber, or a good revolver.

Ask to speak to Doug, he's the owner, and a heck of a great guy.

For Sacramento-area, try The Range in Grass Valley. Lady manager. Indoor range, beginners classes, rentals, sales. Call first to check on hours. If group classes are a problem, ask about private instruction.

The River City Gun Exchange on Fruitridge is full of very professional folks. You can be put off bythe appearance and neighborhood a bit at first, but once you walk in you are treated with respect. I just bought from them.

The Gun Room is also a nice place and they actually have a lady working there but I forget her name. Small on inventory, but clean and new and they have a great range. The have rental guns to get a feel for as well.

The Shooting Gallery in Vacaville has a huge selection of rental guns. The guys are nice enough, but knowledgeable they are not. Prices run pretty high as well.

Several other shops in the area but I don't have any interaction with them other than just wandering through.

I know this day and age sucks for this, but why not set up a range day at The Gun Room with several High Roaders and have her get in the mix. with several people there she wouldn't have to worry over the "stranger with a gun" aspect. My wife doesn't shoot much anymore, but I'm sure I could drag her out and my Daughter and Son love to go to The Gun Room

If she's cute, that works just about anywhere. A little flirting with a touch of honesty never hurt anyone... ;)

Hi Flying V.

I get together with other Sac-area THR members on occasion and we'd love to have her join us so that we could teach her a few things, being that she's a newbie and all.

It definitely wouldn't be a bad idea for her to get professional instruction though, but at the very least we can give her more pointers and give her company on the range. :)

Let us know if she'd like to do that.

I can ditto River City Gun Exchange. Hands down the best service in a Sacramento gun store. Nice too cause they are more focused on practical stuff rather than some place like Wild Sports that mostly caters to hunters. I've had nuch to do with the Gun Room but their new range sure is pretty.
