i was looking at getting an ffl, but i'm not sure what it all intales, costs, time, and laws. i looked at some of those ffl kits you find off google but they all look so cheasy, like a scam. does any one have any info and advise?

All data, forms, etc. are available free of charge for the asking from atf.gov. The only thing they don't give you is a log book--but they give you a copy of the format you can duplicate and bind (staple w/ covers if you like, 3-ring binder, etc).

The kits are an old and worn out $$$ maker for some folks. A scam? No, but needless if you can read. As stated above, this has been talked about many times. My advice--go to ATF site and request the info be sent to you--all the forms and everything--there is no obligation and it's free. Sift through the pile, then decide. It takes 2 weeks to get the forms and such.

My thoughts for you:

Do you own your house? If not, will your landlord OK you selling guns there?
Do you plan to operate business in your house?

ATF can and will search your entire business premise at times. It is wise to think of where you will operate and have that setup prior to applying for the FFL. If you want to operate out of a rented house, talk to your landlord before the ATF calls for their permission.

In addition, if you're doing any manufacturing, contact OSHA and the local FD for any permits pertaining to hazerdous material (black powder, primers, etc).

For the taxes, etc. Setup an LLC and have a business license. It will show ATF you aren't just an "internet dealer" and it will make state\fed taxes easier to manage.

Talk to your references before submitting your app. If you have friends or relatives that joke about you being a "gun nut", don't use them as references.

The first question you should ask yourself is, why do you want to do it?!
Unless you have a lot of money to put into it, don't expect to live off it.
You can buy off the internet in these days most guns for about dealer prices!
Since you live in UT, you don't have a waiting time there or restrictions, right??
If you think that you can buy machine guns (post dealer samples), you need to know that you need for every mg a letter of a PD chief.

It is a lot of work and has it's risk.
So think it over VERY carefully!
