FFL transfer

I would like to purchase a handgun from an individual outside of Texas. I know this requires a FFL transfer. However, I am living in Texas, but I still have my Indiana driver's license. (yes, I know - 30 days )

Can I do an FFL transfer to Texas somehow, or will I have to ship it to Indiana?

If you are heading back to IN any time soon (even for a short visit or something similar) I would have the transfer made there. Probably less headaches that way.

Doesn't Indiana require the purchaser to be a resident? He just publicly stated that he's living in Texas. I know VA law requires that you be an actual resident.

A TX DL appears to be the legal method. JT

Even if you went to Indiana to get it, you would be lying on the federal form which specifies you are a resident of the place where you are buying at.

Lying on the form is a major no no. As in felony, as in bye bye all guns and your freedom for a few years if you get caught.

Best to just suck it up and get the TX license.

You may (may) be able to use alternate proof of residency, such as a lease agreement, utility bills, or somesuch. I've done it before, but maybe not every FFL will be okay with this. Find out before you have the gun sent.

Otherwise, get your Texas license. Maybe get a state ID issued?

Don't have it shipped to Indiana. Irregardless of your DL, you ain't a resident of Indiana any longer.

I'd like to get a driver's license, but it's somewhat more complicated down here. I have to get an emmissions check, then off to the courthouse for a title, then the DPS for the license. You can't get a DL without plating the car. Also, it requires giving the DPS a social security number and a thumbprint. So, I have been putting it off. They don't seem to be open at times when I am not at work or school either.

I suppose I will just have to be play nice with the government.

Chris: Thought of that, but they didn't go for it. I just bought a house on Thursday too. The Kahr - I am working on it.

Cats, you don't have to have a car to get a Texas drivers license. Lotsa people (well, okay, a FEW people) use public transportation and/or company vehicles, and rent cars for occasional use. It's pretty futile to try to rent without a DL.

Uh, I note from your profile you registered in December, showing FTW as location. Isn't that law about getting a Texas DL as soon as you're gainfully employed, still in effect? I see--You must be a college student, or in the military, right? Exemptions there. Nope, engineer, it says here . . . .

However, since my family lives 20 hours away in Indiana, I wanted to make sure I didn't get too lonely and homesick before I committed to living down here. Not much excuse anymore since I bought the house.

Nope, you have to plate your car in Texas to get the driver's license or sign an affidavit stating that you don't own a car.

If you are going to snitch you have only got one more day to do it.

Well, think of it this way - - -

Once you have your TDL, you can get your CHL-- I personally think that alone makes it worthwhile.

Fort Worth MAY be the best of all places to live, if you need a good-sized city. Big enough to have MOST of what you might want to find. Small enough to still be pretty friendly. Right on three interstate highways, so you can drive NSEW conveniently. Big airport if that's important.

And yes, FW really IS "Where the West Begins," geologically, botanically, weather-wise. Meterologists, geologists, botanists, sociologists, (maybe even criminologists ) will all confirm that ten to twenty miles either side of I-35 kinda splits East and West.

I was born in FW, grew up in El Paso, went to college in FW and lived there for a long while. I keep thinking about relocating, but if I do, might as well head west for a few hundred miles. . . .

Where you going to colege? I finally granulated from TCU.
