Hi,

I was wondering if anybody has had any luck with accuracy using a vent-ribbed smoothbore barrel and putting on fiberoptic rear and front sights to improve accuracy with rifled slugs. Do they help? I'm currently using mid bead aligned with front bead.

They are advertised for turkey, but some say dual role for deer:

Also, some are magnetic, do those fly off with recoil?

I cut down an old barrel for an 870 to 21" a few years ago and bought some mainly just to have something for a front bead. I started at 21" in case I messed up and needed a 2nd try to get it right. Cutting at the vent rib posts meant it had to be 19", 21",or 23". Since the set came with a front sight with a red bead and a rear sight with 2 green beads I went ahead and put both on and gave it a try.

I figured the rear sight would be a a waste of time, and it would probably come off, but it worked pretty well. There is no sight adjustment and I'm shooting slugs 3-4" high at 50 yards, pretty close to point of aim at 100 yards. Accuracy is pretty good as well, 3-4" at 100 yards. Maybe I got lucky, who knows how they would work on another gun, or if I'd cut it longer or shorter.

The ones I put on my cut down barrel clamp onto the rib and are held on by a small set screw. I do use a single fiberoptic bead on my duck gun that is magnetic. Helps find the bead when shooting in flooded timber right at legal shooting time for wood duck. Never had it come off from recoil, but it has slipped off in thick brush and a couple of times or when pulling it out of a guncase. I've always found it easily and put it back on. Even if i lost it it would only be a minor inconvience on this gun
