My Rem 1100 does not like the light loads that I use for Crow hunting.

So I would like to use my 870 with a 28" vent ribbed barrel.

The trouble is I have put an XS Ghost Ring sight set on my Remington 870 - which I REALLY like - but the rear sight sits would sit way high above the front bead of the bird barrel.

I do not think it is a good idea to repeatedly remove/install the rear sight base every time I swap barrels.

From the bottom of my 870 20 inch slug barrel to the top of the front sight is 1.562 inches. With the rear ghost ring sight set at the middle of the adjustment range the point of impact is 2 inch high at 50yrds.

The bottom of the 28 inch bird barrel to the top of the vent rib is 1.050 inches - so I need a sight that’s approximately .5 inches tall.

I looked in Midway, Brownells and XS Sights Systems but none seem to list front sight heights.

Is there a front sight available that I could put on the rib that would work with the rear ghost ring sight?

Has anyone dealt with this before?

Thanks,

David

I have done a few 870's with a a ghost ring rear sights and vent rib barrels. The rear sight was a Scattergun Tech and the front sight was an MMC band style clamp. The vent rib was cut back to the second post and touched up. If you want, you can re-drill and tap for the front bead at the second post. This left a couple of inches of unobstructed barrel for the MMC band style front sight. There is vertical adjustment available in the MMC sight and combined with the rear sight, you should be okay. My original intention was to remove the front sight for wing shooting, but tried it with the front sight in place and found I do not notice it. YMMV

To answer Marshals question, I did a bulk buy of #6 for the crow hunting. So I am not willing to purchase higher power shells to make my 1100 happy.

And yes the 1100 is perfectly clean and even has a new “O” ring but still dislikes the light loads.

What I did for the long bird barrel for my 870 was I found a Williams Fire sight set at Gander MTN that has a front sight that was integrated into a base that was wider than the vent rib and more than tall enough to create the same front sight height I have on my slug barrel.

I used an end mill chucked in my drill press and a cheap Chinese cross slide vice to slot out the bottom of the Williams sight. So the Williams sight drapes over the vent rib if you will.

I drilled a hole in the underside to of the front sight base to accept the original Remington front bead sight and drilled and tapped one hole into the vent rib to secure the front sight to the vent rib with the screw provided with the sight set.

It turned out to be a very slick setup - it does not look cobbled up - it looks factory.

I patterned it today with #6 crow stuff and #4 turkey loads. It was spot on without touching the rear ghost ring sight. So I can just swap barrels without touching the rear sight.

I have not made it back out crow hunting yet but expect it to seem weird for a little while looking through the ghost ring sights….. But I think it will work just fine.

Thanks for the info/comments to my question.
