Greetings,
I just picked up a FIE "Standard" .38Spl snubby from a local pawnshop. They had the gun labeled "BROKEN, FIRING PIN WON'T STAY IN". Turns out that they meant the cylinder pin, which is retained by a small button on the frame like on the H&R kit guns. The button was sticking a half-inch out of the frame with the spring exposed, so it was pretty obvious (to me) what the problem was.

I ended up getting it for around $35 OTD, and it took five seconds with a screwdriver to get the release screwed down and working. Works just fine right now, strongly reminiscent of my solid-frame H&R .22.

I "jimmarched" it, and there's a little side shake, and a small bit of endshake. More than on my S&Ws, but not a scary amount.

It's in great condition except that some doofus lost the front sight, but for this price I'm willing to glue a brass bead onto the barrel, which is only 1.5" anyway. Buying the OEM front sight and ramp from Bob's Gun Parts would cost me $16 after postage.

This seems to be the same thing as a German Regent/Arminius, but the post-68 US-made version. It's heavy as all-get-out, so I'm pretty sure it's not cast zinc.

The seller gave me seven days to look it over w/ option to return for full purchase price. Should I just glue on a brass bead for a sight, wrap it in an oily rag, and let it sit in a drawer until I have a use for it, or should I return it to the dealer before it detonates in my hand?

I look at it this way, what can you buy for $35 anymore. I say keep it. Shoot it some and if you get a gun buy back in your area, trade it for the $100 gift certificate to Wallyworld and come out $65 to the good.

If you can get a safe, reliable .38 for $35, throw it in the glovebox and pat yourself on the back.

FIE imported some fairly decent, if inexpensive, handguns. I have one of their .25's that's been sitting in the back of my safe for years, used to be my boot hideout. Shot pretty well.

@zoom: this one is Post '68 GCA, so FIE was building there own gear then. Further attested by the lack of "Made In xxxxxx" stamps.

I'm actually getting curious as to whether this design is copied from H&R, or whether they're both just similar in terms of being a totally minimalist design.

I'm actually starting to like it in an odd way. Still torn between shelling out $16 for a new sight, or just axing a coin in half and soldering it into place as a half-moon sight.

I agree with MCgunner - why pay $16 for a new sight when you can get one for half a dime?

Now that you guys mention it, I know were I can get sevearel 'RG' .22 short revolvers. Maybe if there is a buyback in Dallas and I can buy these guns for $25, I'll make some dough. They are good guns for your opponent to have.

If Matthew shot a BG with his $35 .38, I doubt that said BG would know the difference between the FIE and a high dollar Smith.
