I finally decided between the kimber and sako for those of you who've seen my previous thread. Ordered the kimber 84L stainless classic select grade in .270 Winchester. It'll be my "walking around" rifle while my supergrade m70 will be my "stand rifle". I'm not sure weather to put a Leupold vx-3 2.5-8x36 OR a Leupold vx-r 3-9x40 on 'er. The vx-3 is a little lighter and may be clearer, not sure what the vx-r is considered (vx-1, vx-2, vx-3) but I really like the illuminated recticle but it COULD have issue I'm worried about; mainly being waterproof and the batteries. What scope, between just them two, would you fellow members top the rifle with and why? Btw the price difference is about $80 with the vx-r being the pricier of the two (price isn't too big of a deal this time lol)

Thanks ahead guys,

Cory

Oh and what really surprised me was how long they estimated it to take. 5-6 months, early to mid fall.... hopefully I can get it shooting groups at least a few weeks before the 2012 mn deer season :D

270 has been a good choice for many decades. Around my parts, Remington slide action is a local favorite. Some might contend that the 7mm-08 is more efficient with nearly identical trajectory. But 270 ammo is easy to find and usually cheaper, too.

I feel that much shooting from improvised field postions is how a hunter should "master" his rifle. Affordable ammo is a key factor within this philosophy.

Good hunting to you.

Of your two choices, I'd go with the VX-3 2.5X8X36.
I've an 84M in .308 that is my "still hunting"/stalking rifle. I put a fixed 6X Leopold with a ballistic/ranging retical on it.
For the intended purpose of spot and stalk of Deer, with ranges of from 150 to 350 yds., it's about ideal.
It makes no sense to me to obtain a light weight rifle and bog it down with overpowered optics. That's what your "fixed position", heavy barrel, long range rig is for...

Congrats that sounds nice, maybe get the illuminated just for something different?

Thanks for the input guys. Hunter shooter I think you have the right idea. Its a light rifle, put a light scope on. Maybe ill still get the vx-r on my model 70 later this year. We'll see how busy work is this year (road construction) and if i have extra spending $.

I agree with huntershooter that the VX3 2.5-8x36 is great for such a handy and lightweight rifle. You can reference the series of photos I posted on your last thread.

Good choice IMHO. My Kimber is a joy to shoot and carry in the woods at approximately 6 lb 2 oz scoped up. Pretty too.

I posted some shot groups on the last thread, but just in case you need additional affirmation that you made the right choice, here is a 5 shot sub-moa group from yesterday afternoon. Not bad for an ultra lightweight rifle with a skinny barrel! Can't wait to see pics of yours.

I cant wait to get the call saying my ffl received it! Hopefully ill have enough time to figure out what factory load it likes best before deer season. I'm going to buy a reloading set next winter when I get laid off for a few months and really get into it and hopefully tighten up all my groups.
