I have found a Winchester Model 70 pre-64 featherweight 30-06 for sale in the local area. It comes with a Leupold VX-II or VX-III ( can't remember which) 3-9x40 scope. I haven't laid eyes on her yet but it is described as being in "very good" condition. Asking price is $600 which sounds pretty good to me but would like some opinions from someone more familiar with pre 64 Win's. Thanks for the help, if its a good deal I'll get it for my dad since he collects Winchester and needs a deer rifle!

well thats $400 for the rifle and $200 for the scope. A nice Featherweight is going for $600 up around here, san scope. The "Rifleman's Rifle" only had one problem(well 2 actually, it doesn't handle escaping gases well) it was heavy. The featherweight helped along those line, although they weigh about 7 pounds without scope ! Can't beat 30-06, can't beat Leupold, and a pre mod 70 is just about IT! :)

Any pre-64 Model 70 that's not so worn that all it is is a shooter seems to be worth around $400 to $500, bare. A reasonable appraisal of "very good"? Yeah, probably around $600, bare. The Featherweight category sorta firms that up.

Most of the non-featherweight pre-64's I've seen in my area, with scopes, go for around $700, give or take $100 depending on condition and scope. If it is in good condition, that is definitely a good deal.

I'd look it over carefully... Likely it's a Vari-X scope and not a VX... big difference in value.

I collect Winchester model 70s and have for nearly 30yrs. The pre-war model 70s in un-altered condition are the ones that are truly "collectible".

The post war guns, unless unique in some other way are not of much interest to anyone except "gunshow" dealers who often try to get $800 and up for rifles that are really just very nice "shooters".

Also, any of them in less than 90% original condition are of little collector value with the one caveat listed above...

Custom guns without absolute proof of who did the work are worth less than stock ones are.

Thanks for the input fellas. If my Ruger Super Redhawk sells before he sells the rifle I think I'll jump on it! Thanks again.
