Hey guys I'm just curious as to which scope you guys suggest I get. I have a Sako 85 classic on layaway and haven't decided for certain what scope ill use. I've been thinking I'll get a Leupold vx-3 1.5-5x20 or a vx-3 2.5-8x36. The sako will be used mainly for deer but also things like coyotes, bobcats and other vermin from time to time with 95% of shot's under 200 yards and most within 100. My other main hunting rifle is a winchester model 70 extreme weather 338 win mag and I have a Leupold vx-3 2.5-5x36 on it. What scope do you suggest for the sako? I'm really leaning towards the vx-3 1.5-5x20 for it's lightweight and fast target acquisition since it'll be mostly used as a "walking in the woods" deer rifle. I'm dead set on the rifle so no rifle suggestions please. I'm also Leupold loyal and that's all i buy.

For what a sako cost and useing only a leupold scope go with a VX6 2-12 scope. You will have the low power needed for close up shoots and still be able to give a deer a good look over for self- imposed yard limit at higher settings and be able to pick a shot if you choose. I have used a 2.5-10 for 25 years for thick bottoms and wood lots and never felt over scoped .

Might as well get another scope that your used too.... or if its too much go less power.

My thought is that unless there are some special requirements, it is pretty hard to beat a Leupold VX-3 3.5-10 x 40 CDS as a general purpose rifle scope.

If that is too magnification I would drop all the way down to a red dot: Aimpoint T-1.

If not enough, something like the Leupold Mk4 4.5 x 14 x 50.

The VX-3 in 2.5-8X36 is the perfect all around hunting scope. Hard to go wrong with that on any hunting rifle. Good for 20 yard snap shots, or 500 yard precision shots. The 36mm objective lets in enough light for shooting well after legal shooting time is over but at 11.5 oz. is light and trim enough to use on any lightweight mountain rifle.

If you want something any smaller I'd suggest the 1.75-6X32. The 1.5-5X20's just don't let enough light through to make me happy in low light shooting.

2.5-8. But I would look for one NOS somewhere. I don't trust Leup quality as much as I used to. I would look for one about 12 years old. one of my Leup 2-7 shook apart and had to be repaired (on a semi auto) Another new scope with AO has excessive slack on the objective adjustment giving a cheap feel right out of the box.
