So at long last I'm escaping Southern California. Had some fun here, but time to move on. This place will implode in the next 10-15 years...I'd rather watch it from a distance :D

I'm moving to Raleigh NC in about 2 weeks. How long will it take me to get a CCW once I land there? How are the laws regarding purchasing guns (waiting time, limitations, etc...)? Finally, where's a good place to shoot in the triangle area?
 
OK, found packing.org, so CCW questions are answered. Given the cost of an NC resident permit, could I just get an FL out of state CCW and use that?

North Carolina Laws
It's against the law to sing off key.
Elephants may not be used to plow cotton fields.
If a man and a woman who aren't married go to a hotel/motel and register themselves as married then, according to state law, they are legally married.
All couples staying overnight in a hotel must have a room with double beds that are at least two feet apart. Making love in the space between the beds is strictly forbidden.
A marriage can be declared void if either of the two persons is physically impotent.

It is a misdemeanor to urinate or defecate publicly.
Charlotte
Women must have their bodies covered by at least 16 yards of cloth at all times.

It is against the law to rollerblade on a state highway.
 
I've recently considered looking into a Florida non-res permit in addition to my SC permit, since the two combined would pretty much cover most of the southeast. I've heard it takes a while to get one though.

Not 100% sure, but I doubt there are any waiting periods, FOID cards, approval forms, purchase permits, etc, etc in NC. Its probably just like it is in SC: wake up one morning, decide you want a gun, cruise over to your local gunshop with cash in hand, and walk out with your AR-15 ten minutes later. The only non-Federal restriction here that I know of is that we can only take transfer of one handgun per 30 days.... hope that even that restriction is gone in NC.

When purchasing a long gun, you only have to fill out the 4473 and undergo the NICS check. Handguns, however, require a purchase permit.

Permits can be obtained from the Sheriff of the county in which you reside. Generally handgun purchase permits are issued within a week of application for one, however state law dictates that the Sheriff has 30 days to decide whether or not to approve and issue a permit. Permits cost $5 each.

For what it's worth, about 4-5 years ago I applied for some purchase permits and had to wait a week before I could pick them up.

I now live in a different county, and about two months ago I went to get a couple purchase permits. This time I went to the Sheriff's office, filled out the application and walked out with my permits all in about 15 minutes.

It all depends on where you live.

It appears that the Wake County Sheriff's Office has a 7 day 'processing period'.

Your local sheriff issues gun purchase permits and CCH licenses.

Purchase permits are easy enough. Pay the fee ($5-ish each). NICS is done. Pick up permits, go to the store of your choice, pick out the love of your life, pay for it, walk out, and shoot it. No waiting.

CCH time varies depending upon local demand. I live in Charlotte and last time I was in the sheriff's office they were running 6 weeks to get the appointment. During that time take the CCH class which has to be done before the application process starts.

No gun registration (officially). General acceptance by government. Little hassle. Word of warning. Raleigh-Durham area of the state is the Berkley of NC. The area is infested with screaming statists and their favorite institutions Duke University and UNC Chapel Hill.

Cultural adaptation is necessary. Get conversant on ACC basketball real quick. NASCAR is a religion. Learn what car number goes with what driver. Then learn what sponsor goes with what car number. Final stage of adaption is to learn what Crew Chief goes with what car number.

And no I ain't kiddin'.

I think I'll forego the NASCAR stuff...my easy excuse is that I don't watch TV. Seems to work out here...if it don't out there, well, I just met someone I don't need to bother being friends with :)

Neat thing about NC in 4 hours you can be sitting at the beach sunning
yourself or go 4 hours west and enjoy the Blue Ridge mountains.

I secound what some of the other's say Raleigh/Durham area is very liberal, at least the metro areas.
 
I didnt bother with my FL permit, I dont think I'll be going to MS, LA, or ND anytime soon, and those are the only states that recognize FLs permit and not NC's. SC and VA, however, recognize NC's permits but not FL's. I occasionally have to go to SC or VA, or else I would have just got the FL permit and not bothered with NC's.

Also, the NC CCW permit can be used instead of the NICS background check for long arms. Also, no waiting on purchase permits, in my county anyway, if you have your CCW permit.

Congrats on escaping - I got out last September after 48 years and would never go back that stinkhole after finding what freedom is like! :D

RileyMC, that questionaire is hilarious! I think the only other equirement to move to NC is to book a slot on the Jerry Springer Show. :)
