I have been looking around for a while for a 1911 in 9mm. I had not really found anything I liked in my price range or in stock. I found this on gunbroker for $829 and bought it today. It looks pretty sweet. I could not find it in Springfields website. Is this a newer item or has it been around for a while?

Congradulations! I used to have one and you will have alota fun shooting 9mm through a 1911. Yes I believe they have been around for awhile.

The "Loaded" version has been around for quite some time. This one's so popular - and production so low, they're very hard to find. Nobody around here could locate one, so special orders were not possible. It was months before I found a new one in a local shop (I wanted to examine it closely before buying). The price you quote is in line with what I paid (I actually paid a little more).

Around a while? Well, sorta'. My Colt 9mm LW Commander was made in 1951 ...is that a while? :)

I have a Kimber Target II in 9mm. A 9mm in a full size 1911 is so much fun, I could spend all day at the range with just this handgun - I think I have, and it was fun.

I know the colt has been around a bit more than a while. I was asking about the Stainless Steel 9mm Target . What are the most reliable mags for this gun?

What are the most reliable mags for this gun?
The Kimber mags in 9mm were the best I've seen until recently. I looked at several that were out-of-spec badly. The follower actually overlapped the mag body. I have a Chip McCormick that functions well 99% of the time. It is a 38 Super/9mm mag, therefore there is no spacer in the back of the mag. This occasionally causes the 9's not to feed well.

Historically, 9mm 1911s have been viewed as somewhat unreliable. Alot of this comes from the design (or lack thereof) of the mags. If you lock the slide back with a run of the mill plain vanilla 9mm magazine, you'll notice the cartrige will have a considerable jump to the feed ramp. This has been a source of reliablility problems. Some attempts to address this has been made with inserting spacers into the back of the mags. Doesn't seem to work too well from what I've read. Factory Springfield 9mm magazines a supposedly designed with a little mini-ramp in the magazine to assist with reliable feeding. Now, Metalform makes these mags for Springfield but they are not the same as Metalform branded mags (I don't have any to compare). So I'm inclinded to trust the Springfield mags until they prove me wrong. Wilson Combat has recently entered the 9mm 1911 magazine market. I would trust them. May even get a few. I need to get to the range. I have 2 Springfield Loaded 1911s - one with adjustable sights and one with Novak style fixed sights. Both came with 2 factory mags, so I really don't need any additional. Try the Springfield mags first. Give them a good cleaning and see how they function. If they work well, I wouldn't see any reason to buy additional mags from anybody else. If they don't work well. Look around and try a few others. There are not that many makers.

you have to be a bit picky with mag selection as the 1911 action is a bit long to correctly feed the shorter 9mm round.

i've been hearing some good reports lately on the Metaform 9mm mags

the gun performed flawless for the first 200 rounds. The mags worked well. I got a coupon from SA, I bought 5 more mags @ $15 each, they are normally $35.

Tripp research makes some great followers to put in 9mm 1911 mags. I hear that the metalform mags are the best, but mine is 100% with any mags I've used. 3000+ rounds and counting. I do want a full size, however, this one shoots great.

I use Metalform Springfield style mags in my Kimber 9mm. Its very reliable and I carry it often.

Although I am currently without a 9mm 1911, I would try Wilson Combats new 9mm ETM magazine. It works so well with 45...

I once had a SA 9mm that would not function with ANY brand of magazine.

A friend loaned me his STI Trojan in 9mm. ALL of my mags worked.

It then dawned on me that I did not have a magazine issue, I had a gun issue. The SA got traded on an STI the next day. Thousands and thousands of rounds, nary a bobble, even with my late night manufactured 9mm reloads.

I almost got the STI, I have one, spectacular gun but the finish and engraving leave lots to be desired. I shot copper and lead reloads today along with some +p ammo, no dissapointments here.
