After years of "drooling" over these pistols, I finally got my Sig Sauer P229R .357. I'm pretty sure it it the DAK model but I'm not 100% sure. It does not have the decocker, and the hammer does not protrude from the back of the slide unless the trigger is pulled. It does have a what I would define as a "catch" or "click" halfway thru the trigger pull if I keep pulling, the trigger pull stays the same. If I release the trigger then begin pulling back again, the pull is lighter. It has the night sights, factory grips and 3 magazines; the original box and all of the papers, guides and the lock that comes with them from the factory. I got it used for $800. Only had 100 rounds thru it. This pistol has the added benefit of a laser engraved NC State Highway Patrol badge on top of the slide. If I understand correctly, the Trooper that this was issued to was one of the last to get issued a Sig before the SHP changed to the M&P's. It has no holster wear AT ALL!! This thing looks brand new, he took very good care of it. Now the delima is to shoot it regularly and use it for my carry, or keep it in the condition it is? My other carry is a full size M&P 40. (I'm 6' 2", 250 lbs so concealing them is not that hard for me to do). It is much different in my hands compared to the M&P, and I noticed the slide sits up higher off the web of my hand than the M&P.

This is my first Sig (actually, my first non S&W for that matter!) and I am wondering how these shoot. I have heard several people say these things are amazingly accurate and incredible to shoot. I have only shot my M&P 40 and Sigmas 9 & 40 regularly so I know this will be different somewhat from what I am used to (like going from The Flintstones to Star Trek according to 1 friend). I am planning on purchasing the drop in .40 cal barrell, if anybody ever has one in stock, due to pricing of the .357 Sig ammo.

Any advise, tips, tricks or information anybody could give would be appreciated.

Congrats on the new Sig! I'm personally a fan of the 228, but a 229R is close enough :D

If you don't have a decocker on the side and your hammer is flush when not firing, you have either a DAO or a DAK. Given that your gun was issued by a PD, I would hazard a guess that it is DAK, but its pretty easy to test. Cycle the slide and pull the trigger (unloaded gun of course) and then pull the trigger a second time without cycling the slide. If you have the same trigger weight, it is DAO, if you have a lighter first pull and a heavier second pull, you have a DAK.

These guns are great for shooting and carrying and with proper care should last for years. My 228 is one of the most accurate guns I own and has a really nice SA trigger pull, and I personally think that short of a good S&W revolver, you can't get a better DA trigger. (This could be more a reference to W.German Sigs though, I haven't shot a US made one to be sure that it has the same trigger feel, but it should still be a great gun.)

Personally I would carry it. It should be a bit easier to conceal than your full size without giving up too much in the way of capacity. (I'm 6'0" and about 175 lbs and it completely disappears with a good holster/belt combo.) In addition to the .40 barrel, I'd also see about picking up a 9mm conversion barrel which would help with the cost of practice. You also might want to look into the e2 grips. They take a bit of width out of the gun and make it more comfortable for some to shoot. Its all personal taste though. For me, I like the standard grips on my 228, but prefer the e2 grips on the 226. I would also try to get a retrofit kit to make the trigger into DA/SA, but I've never been a fan of the DAK myself. If you like it, keep it. FWIW I have no problem transitioning between something like a Glock trigger and the DA/SA of my Sig.

You'll like the 40

...

Did I hear Sig P229 ?

Have two in 40cal, both with 6k plus "flawless rounds" and they just keep getting better.. They're just a well balanced platform that results in on-going accuracy.

One with my Beretta Px4 40/G

Just take care of it, so easy to inspect/dissasemble and clean and use gun grease on the rails and guides to aid it against wear and tear, many to choose from, light to thick, depending on Temps, cold you want thin, hot you want thicker.

Many options for grips, such as Hogue side-panel only rubber ones like I use - to CTC laser grips (really a nice combo) of grip and laser in-one which I have, use on my wife's P229R 9mm seen in below left with 228/9mm on right

They'll shoot just about anything you feed them

Enjoy,

I have no knowledge of sigs whatsoever, and I am interested in knowing the difference between the Double Action Only, and the DAK. What is DAK?
Congrats on your purchase, it seems like a really nice piece. I am interested in buying a sig but I don't like the de-cocker lever, are there other sigs available without that lever on them?

warning...Sigs are very addictive. after my first (228) i had to have another...then another and so on.
i currently have the 228, 220, 229, 2009 polymer, 232, and my newest is the 238. love them all
