looking at the .40 versions of the above.

I shot the M&P and the Sig today, the sig failed to feed 3 times, and failed to lock the slide all but once or twice....now this is a well used and abused range rental, but should I be worried?

the M&P was very nice as well, as everyone has said you pick it up and it just fits, and points very well. my only beef was the front sight dot...well it wasn't there so it was a bit annoying to sight in, not the pistols fault, again a abused and used range weapon.

to go from the long resetting pull of the sig to the short and light pull of the M&P was a little difficult to get use to.

I Haven't shot the XD yet but handling it feels great, seems a bit top heavy, and from what I've heard is snappy for the caliber.

out of these three what are the pros and cons?

Im leaning towards the Sig as of now...

I can't speak for the other two pistols as I haven't shot either in .40. In a SIG, failure to lock the slide back is a very common problem for new SIG shooters. It's usually caused by riding the slide lock release with the thumb of your (usually) right hand. Happens a lot until you adjust your grip.

As for the FTFd's? It's a range gun. SIGs are extremely reliable and very accurate. My 226 .40 has never had a failure of any kind in over 1500 rounds. That isn't to say the other pistols you mentioned won't suit you just as well or better.

I also can only speak for one, but that is the XD .40. I like it, reliable, points nice, and muzzle flip is reasonable. Sorry I haven't shot the others to compare.

that isn't normal for a sig and that shouldn't be something that you should worry about of you buy a sig.

the m&p's have great ergo's, but my ;favorite handgun in .40 is teh xd series. i have 2 and i will get more before i am through.

and from what I've heard is snappy for the caliber.
i have no issues with this, and they are much less "snappier" than say glocks and other .40 poly guns.

I would suggest the Sig. I suspect that you were riding the slide release as well. Are you right handed or left handed?

It could also just be dirty.

Might I also throw HK's hat into the ring. I really recommend them as well, especially in .40 S&W.

Anyone of these should be good guns. I have shots Sigs in 9mm and .40 and own four XDs and one M&P. M&P in 9mm though.

The Sigs I have tried have all been accurate, and I have to say so have the XDs and the M&P as well.

For me, the larger caliber XDs do have more muzzle rize, but depending on your grip and size of your hand, they're not unmanageable. And I consider the XDs very reliable pistols, at least for me. Haven't had a problem with any of the XDs I own. Bore axis is higher than the M&P, but probably on a level with the Sigs, but the Sigs I have shot have all been metal and the frame's weight gave it more heft and probably some more stability.

The M&P has the best grip of the bunch to my hand's feeling, but is presently in need of some tuning since extracted brass goes straight up and then lands on my noggin.

So Pros and cons for me, considering I'm on the smallish side with small paws are as follows:

XDs fit nicely. M&P fits better. Sigs are in between these two for feel, but fiirst double action trigger pull is a reach for my trigger finger.

My experience, XDs and the Sigs have all been stellar performers out of the box, M&P needs a some work to fix the extraction situation I just mentioned, but is a neat shooter.

Sig's single action trigger is great. Double action with the standard trigger is hard for me and my small hands and I have to adjust my grip to accomodate it. I also don't like double action autos in general, but strangely enough, don't consider it a problem with DA revolvers (own a couple of those too). Go figure.

Sigs are accurate and reliable from my experience and if you can afford 'em and like the DA trigger, couldn't go wrong with one.

XDs I like, but they do have a long trigger reset when compared to these other two. Though the trigger breaks in nicely after a couple of hundered rounds. I also like the grip safety as an added feature. Quite accurate as well.

M&P is also nicely accurate and sits lower in the hand with somewhat less muzzle rise when compared to the XD, but the difference is negligible in my opinion. The trigger was more gritty that the XD, but take up and reset felt a little less lengthy. But I like the XD trigger a bit more.

In the end, do what every one else is going to tell you, try before you buy and actually feel how each pistol sits in the hand. Take the time to examine the guns and look at the trigger pull that you like most and go from there. I think any of these would do you well.

i have all 3 and like the xd the least, and the sig the most. however, mag availability and cost would plant me firmly in the m&p camp if i didn't have any and wanted one of them.

thanks for the replies guys, I'm right handed, so maybe I was riding the slide release. I know its a rental but it its annoying when your evaluating/testing a gun and it keeps jamming.

I honestly liked both very much, I was more accurate/quicker w/ the sig, however the long reset did catch me a few times w/ a click instead of a bang...use to a 1911 trigger.

i want all 3....is that bad?

I haven't tried the Sig, so I can't speak on it's behalf. I picked the M&P over the XD after a XD jammed three times in a row on me. I was all but sold on it, but I wasn't fond of the trigger much, and so I took the jamming to be a sign to pass it up.

If you must get only one, it's no contest whatsoever. Sig without question.

Your bad experience is likely due to abuse. Common with range rentals.

Of those, I would choose the Sig then the M&P. However, this is only due to the Glock not being part of the line-up. I own several Sigs, M&Ps and Glocks, but cannot voice an opinion on the XD (I don't own any). Go Sig or S&W in my opinion, but then again, you must buy what suits you the best, not us.

I've had a P229 .40 for several years, and have loved it from the day I bought it. It's extremely accurate for me, and I don't ever recall having any failure. I'd guess I've put maybe 2500-3000 rounds through it.

I picked up a Glock 27 a year or so ago and started carrying it as my CCW because I thought it was easier to conceal. Since this was what I was carrying, it's what I practiced with at the range, and my Sig became a safe queen during that time.

Recently, I took both the Glock and the Sig to the range, and I was shocked by how poorly I shot the Sig. I thought I had a loose sight or something. Went back a little while later with just the Sig, and by the third empty mag, it was back to being a tack-driver.

I concluded that my previous experience it was simply because I become conditioned to shooting the G27: totally different ergos, trigger, rise, etc.

Since then, during that same period, I flirted with both the XD and the M&P, and liked both, but I shot slightly better with the XD. I was about to go with the XD, even though I wasn't happy about the "limited" parts availability for it.* Then about the same time S&W came out with the rebate offer, a friend of mine let me run a bunch of rounds through his M&P .45, and that sealed the deal for it.

So now - I'll be selling my G27, and probably go back to carrying the P229 (since I've found a CCW holster that is far more comfortable than anything I'd carried it in before). But I'm also toying with the idea of getting an M&P .40 compact, for those times when I feel I need deeper concealment.

But to answer the original question - if I had to choose just one and give the rest away - I'd definitely keep my Sig 229.

* Regarding the parts issue for the XDs - yes - I know they are starting to make "some" parts available to the public, but some is not all. And I know a lot of people don't see this as an issue, and think my decision to not buy a gun because they don't make all the parts for that gun available to the public is silly (or even stupid). For me, it's simply a matter of principle, and just my opinion.

Not a bad choice among the three. I went with an M&P and I'm very pleased. :)

I have all 3 but in different calibers, all I can say to you is to go for how they feel in your hand, I love all 3 of mine each one fits the way I want that one to feel. They are all good guns and for the most part reliable.
Take your time and rent some better ones then the beatup range rentels.

Did you shoot the SIG DA first shot and SA for followup shots? Unless it was one of the DAO variations, I'd not be comparing it to the M&P or XD which use the Glock-pioneered partially cocked striker system that has every trigger pull the same vs. the DA/SA operational mode pf the SIG. Not to mention Polymer frame vs. alloy frame.

I don't like DA/SA operation, and quit buying them once I came to the conclusion I'd never learn to like it.

All three are very good guns, but IMHO SIGs are inflated in price, though not as bad as H&K, making either the M&P or the XD a better gun for the money.

Lowest cost of spare mags gives the XD another advantage, but overall I like the M&P best of the three, although my XD sees more range time than either (SIG is a safe queen) because I have the 5" tactical model and that extra inch of sight radius makes a disproportionate difference at my age. But when S&W makes a 5" model of the M&P I'll sure be getting one.
