Dang it was heavy!

There I was cruising my local gunshow, small bag of ammo in hand when I saw it. Sitting under some glass at a private sellers booth. I'm still in the process of saving up, so I knew I couldn't buy it, but I just had to hold it...

It was really heavy. I have a 25-9 with a 6 inch barrel, and even with the weight difference caused by the different barrel lengths, the 29 felt way heavier. Almost denser. Did S&W used to use heavier material on its guns, or was I just starstruck? My 25 feels like a toy compared to that 29...

naaa. the gun is heavier due to the extra steel, but feels much heavier because that steel is much further from your hands.

i have a 686 with the 8.375" barrel. almost have to take a step back when it goes on target (just kidding). it is actually heavier than my six inch model 29, and feels a lot heavier when on target.

That's not at all the sensation I get when holding a 29. Now, the full lugged variants, that's a different story, but the standard 29 feels.....svelte in my hands.

Thats nothing as I got to hold a S&W model 16-2 and a model 16-4 with an 8 3/8 inch barrel yesyerday at the gun show yesterday. Sadly they were not for sale. A fellow collector had brought them to the show to share them with me. He then produced a S&W regulation police target revolver for me to examine. Papered as one of the 196 that S&W made. Reall cool gun. Alas I did not have the cash to purchse but it didn't matter as they were not for sale. Yet. Hope springs eternal.

Murf: That makes sense, but...I don't know. It just felt different.

DavidE: Oh, the gun felt good (even with the awful rubber grips the owner had on it, but it was still heavy

JellyJar: 975 was the sticker. I didn't ask about papers of the box. The seller claimed that the gun had not been fired, but the rubber grips on the gun told me that that might have been a fib. I'm saving up for one myself, i would have tried to talk him down a bit, but it just isn't in the cards...for now.

Kurastduuks: XD. I have a feeling my 5.5 inch 45 colt blackhawk would disagree with you on that

To me, there is heavy, but "clunky" which feels heavier than the scale shows.

And then there heavy, yet "balanced and lively," which flat out defies the scale's reading.
