I am new to using guns. This year my husband and I started and went whole hog. We have our CCWs, a few rifles and pistols.

Since we both are teachers we cannot carry all the time. I am certainly not risking my career.

Yesterday morning I get up to make breakfast. Toss on some grubbies, (jeans tshirt), I change for work after breakfast. I decide to go to local bakery and get some pastries.

This is the thought process
I stop for a second .._gun_...? I'm just going around the corner. Yea and this happened less so "around the corner", driving right by it. The mart is on my way to bakery.

I put my snubbie in my back pocket under my coat and went to bakery.

(my grammar is much better, I am just trying to relay brain wave impulses at 5 am)

It's something you get used, like grabbing wallet, keys and cell phone on the way out. Good call on making a personal safety tool a habit.

The only way to have a gun when you need one, is to have one all the time. It's unfortunate some of us are constrained by circumstance to have to subject ourselves to the criminal-enhancing policies of some institutions. I used to work on a military installation, for example, and could not carry to work either.

But we do what we can, when we can. Sincere congratulations to you and your husband for taking your own security seriously and preparing to protect yourselves should the need arise.

Stay Safe,

lpl

I was being helped by a gentleman behind the counter at KTP (mini-Cabelas type place). He was really going the extra mile to pull a lot of handguns out of the case and making a few subtle recommendations...

I told him "I'm not really interested in pocket carry"

he simply replied "as you carry more and more, you eventually will be"

I still don't pocket carry.... but I fully appreciate his point now....

so very, very convenient for taking it off and putting it on....

need to find room on the list for that J-frame with a CT laser....

Fortunately, my first carry piece was a J-frame and a IWB clip holster that slips into the waits band of everything from shorts to athletic wear to jeans to dress slacks. This carry combo absolutely was instrumental in forming good carry habits, meaning ALL THE TIME.

gallowglas- Good for you. It's those "what could possibly happen?" moments that will screw us all. I ALWAYS wear my seatbelt. Both times I was in an auto accident I contemplated not wearing my belt before I got going. Glad I put it on as both were at least toss-me-around-the-interior bad if not toss-me-out-the-car bad.

SSN Vet- I've found the opposite to be true. The longer I've carried the more I've carried. Started off with keys, wallet, mid-size 1911 & one reload. Now I run a full size gun w/light, 3 spares, couple knives, wallets, keys, phone, small SAK. But everything has a well-defined purpose.

Thank you for exercising your right to bear arms. You and your family are safer for it. May it be a fire extinguisher you never use to put out a fire.

Good for you, but if you're going to make it a habit, then you owe it to yourself to do it right.

If I read correctly, you just put the gun in your back pocket without a holster. At the very least, use a pocket holster.

I don't favor pocket carry, as it has many shortcomings, but I recognize that many people do just for the convenience factor. They should practice drawing from their pocket starting with hand on gun and hand outside of pocket.

This is what happened to me as well...my CCW is part of "the stuff" I carry, if not the centerpiece.

When we first started dating my girlfriend was taken aback just a bit. I taught her to shoot and now she reminds me to "take your gun" when we go out and about.

Oh, ensure you find a reasonably (if not outright) comfortable way to carry, thereby making the experience more pleasant so you're likely to repeat it.

It's not only their families that are safer for it. My family, your family, and Joe Public are safer for it too.

"pocket holster" I am considering.
Normally I have a IWB by Mikes, but that takes time to get it because it needs a belt. Nothing goes right without the belt, pants droop (I've lost weight), gun shifts...etc. This was a quick 10 minute run.
I'm hefty and appendix carry doesn't work, I found it I shift it behind my back it works. I am looking at a leather one MOB or SOB.

I have a Galco ankle that I'm working with on inside weak leg. I wore it all afternoon shopping in large city. Working on not having that limp or to be self concious.

My husband is looking for a compact 45, the Hi Point .45 and Judge make carry awkward.

I still pocket carry occasionally - for me, pocket carry is not a good option when driving because of the access. I used to carry a Jframe but have moved to a XD9sc for the capacity if I am wearing a jacket or similar.

My wife has incrementally been approaching that 100% carryability goal. We've tried out several guns and modes of carry for her.

We've finally found her "everywhere" gun, the Sig P238. From pocket carry to the waistband (Crossbreed), she's almost always got a carry option with that little bugger. She's even started toting it around the house. With consistent effort, the places and times she doesn't carry have been drastically reduced. Soon, there may be none left. She has become especially vigilant since she got pregnant.

Congrats on looking after #1 -- You.

My husband doesn't carry even if he has a permit to do so. Yesterday I found out why...his shoulder holster feels very uncomfortable he said. Or was just a plain excuse??? I went to my den across his and came back with my Bersa Thunder 380, handed it to him and asked him to carry that, at least try it, because it is much smaller than his .45 and is concealable. He was happy. Today he did not go out and the gun is still where he left it last night...near his pooter. Maybe tomorrow another excuse??? I wish he will carry. I wish he will make that into his outfit to carry...

GREAT!

in a week you will start to think about it less, in two you will quit touching it, and in a month you'll feel naked without it:D

Yup... that's what I do with a 36 ounce gun, two spare mags, my backup gun with its spare.

...and cell phone, watch, positive outlook, wallet, cash, wedding ring, keys, knife, situational awareness, vigilance, sunglasses, good posture, shopping list, and the occasional chap stick.

Just one more thing added to the daily stuff.

.

good on you

i too visit EDU facilities in my line of work, and the inability to stay armed throughout the workday bothers me. so i make up for it by CCW'ing everywhere legal at other times, including around the house. quality holsters (i'm a Crossbreed convert) and a good belt make for a comfortable day.

I have discovered that the absolute best way to "finally making carrying a habit" was to get a good gun belt. It makes the "impossible to carry" ..."possible". The best belt I have found is an "inner duty belt".

It's a velcro fastened belt that cops wear underneath their uniform belts. Of course it looks funny because it does not have a buckle...but with the shirt untucked, its great.
It can give you the perfect fit that you would want in a belt.

By the way, I like "pocket carry" as method of carrying.

I too am starting to carry more and more, and will carry daily when I get my Magnum Research Micro Eagle. Its like a bicycle helmet (or any other of the countless analogies)- does you no good sitting at home when you are out riding.
