I need your guys and gals help. I have been contemplating getting an AR 15 for quite some time now. I've looked at so many I'm confused and lost.

Here's where your help will hopefully come in. This gun will mostly be used for plinking and eventually I will start using it to shoot out to a longer range. I am trying to keep the cost down for right now. I need a solid base and I will upgrade later when I start doing the long range stuff.

I need to keep the price under 900 and the further under 900 the better.

So, my question is what would you all recommend? I would prefer to keep it a .223 because of the cost of ammo.

Thank you in advance for all your help.

Good luck. With the hysteria going on right now guns that were going for $750 earlier this year are running $1300+ now.

Agreed. You may have missed the boat this time, unless you're willing to shell out a LOT more cash. Either pony up now or wait however long it takes for this panic to subside.

For reference, primalmu is about right. AR type rifles are going for almost double what they were a month ago. The S&W Sport models were selling for $699 most places around here. Shelves are bare and when you do find one, the price is easily $1,200.

Until gun control legislation is voted out and gun manufacturers are able to catch up to their back orders, you are not going to get an AR (that's worth owning) for less than $900. I suggest finding a new bandwagon to start or jump on as this one is long gone.

Yeah, I was thinking about getting one in the next year or two. Fat chance on that now. In any case, i am happy with my collection to date. Serves me well.

Either wait it out or move as the other posters said. I was lucky I went to my LGS just before Newtown looking for an M & P sport. The guy said he had no idea when they would get any in as there were pretty popular. They had a reg M & P 15 for under $1100, I figured I had waitied long enough and bit the bullett and put a down payment on it. Went back the Monday after Newtown to pay if off and they said if they could even get of the guns in stock they'd be selling for $500 - $700 mores then what I paid. Sometimes timing is everything. I may be optomisitc but I think some of teh hysteria will subside in teh next few months and makers (guns, ammo, mags) will have had some time to restock the shelves.

Someone has a Kel Tec SU 16C up for sale on my local classified website with 300 rounds and 3 mags for $1600. The ad describes it as a AR type rifle. I bet someone will buy it.

There are different barrel lengths available. Shooting "out to longer ranges" might point to a 20" barrel rather than the 16".

If you don't do run and gun shooting sports, nor have it as a home defense rifle, the 20" would probably be better. If you also wanted it for the above, the shorter might be better.

If its like it was in 2008 it will take about 6-8 months and ARs will be all over the place again. So will ammo. And for fair prices.

I managed to get a DPMS about two days before everything went crazy. With shipping and transfer it cost me $781. I saw the same rifle sell on GB two days later for $1700. I also bought a new RRA Handle for $100. I am set. I have a mini-14 and H&R 223 so already have about 3500 rounds of ammo.

I think the gun ban will be a bust and people that spent $3500 for a Bushmaster will feel silly in a few months.

Here are a couple of pics of the rifle.

The previous posters are correct. Prices are nuts right now because there's a gun control push, so demand has skyrocketed and supply has plummeted, with predictable results. Wait to buy and run the risk of never getting one, or buy one now for a most assuredly obscene price and still run the risk of having it outlawed. ;)

Options are many. Off the top of my head:

Direct impingement or piston: Direct impingement is reliable with a quality AR and reasonable cleaning. Ask someone who's been infantry for tips on cleaning the things. :) Piston ARs are newer, and don't get as dirty, but I can't say anything about reliability or potential parts breakage. If it's well made it'll be fine, but with all the manufacturers and models out there...

Flat top or not? Here's another personal preference issue. If you want to use optics then you probably want a flat top. If you want one with a "carry handle" then there are mounts you can place on top of that, but then you'll be looking at more inches between bore and scope. I'd say get a flat top.

Barrel length: It's up to you. 20" is traditional and gets pretty good muzzle velocity; 16" is handier and you lose some oomph. Trade off.

Replaceable parts: collapsible butt-stock, rails on the front, lights, lasers, front grips, video cameras, and so on can be added later, if you like.

The "firearm" itself is the lower. You can swap an upper on in seconds, so this might change what you pay for and how you value the bits and pieces.

Maybe double your budget, or maybe a bit more until the hysteria dies down, and you may get an bottom rung, but serviceable AR-15. If things blow over they may get less expensive again. If there are further restrictions, or bans, the sky is the limit. Basically, you are rolling the dice right now. Get one for aroun $2K, and make sure you CAN get one or wait and see where things go.

In any event, welcome to the AR "brotherhood". Better late than never.

We have a brotherhood? Why didn't I get my decoder ring and instructions for the secret handshake?

The secret handshake isn't reveild until your 4th AR and you have to have 6 to get the decoder ring.
;)

If you haven't already, would recommend you first spend 35 bucks or so on your choice of Pro Second Amendment organizations, then write your Congressmen. In a year or so you may be able to pick one up for what you're looking to spend.

Are you set on .223/556? You can get the m&p 15-22 for $450-600. It's more of an ar clone that is dedicated in 22lr. The nice thing about this clone is that the controls are the same size as a full size ar.

I picked up my 6920 fde edition over the weekend. Ordered on the Monday after all this started for $1249. Looks very nice and am just learning how it works and getting to know it. Luckily i purchased 500 rounds of xm193 last summer before i even had a gun to shoot it.

Glad you weren't at the local gun store I was at this past weekend. The BCM AR that I bought last year for $1,100 is now $2,999, and PMags were $75. Hoping in a month or so when the media gets going on the debt, or some other new topic some of this hysteria will die down. And yup, I do belong to the NRA (got to do what little I can, aside from introducing non-shooters to our sport).
