Finally won a match or a slow day at the range

Hi All, I just wanted to brag I finally won a plate shoot at my club. It isn't that I'm all that great but the weather was crappy, the match format a little different, and the turnout was low. That means I snagged the A class trophy.

There are some guys who can smoke through the plate racks with an auto pistol but seemed to have a lot of trouble with the revolver. I don't think there is all that much difference.

One thing that was good for me was that I saw some of the other guys being awkward with their revolvers and it relaxed me to see them at my level. So I didn't get all psyched up and try to rush to beat them. That's when I get all flustered and lose.

Almost everyone at the club is there to have fun and so the competition is not fierce. Except for the father and son duos. The guy I beat in the final round was very gracious. But a couple of the guys who lost had all sorts of complaints and excuses. Give it a rest it is the Podunck gun club we are at not the Bianci Cup.

My only goal in any of these contests is to last longer then my club sponsor, a guy who loves to break them off on me. Today I manged to do that and collect a shiny trophy too!

Congratulations! Every man should gather in a victory once in a while no matter the circumstances. You did not know the field you eventually faced when you left to attend and were willing to accept the consequences of the unknown.

Today fate smiled on you, relish it. Fate has, no doubt, treated you otherwise in the past and will do so again in the future. But, with this win, you have renewed a priceless commodity-hope!

I know what you mean. I remember being match winner at a PPC shoot - I was only a "sharpshooter" and there were some masters and high masters, but they were having bad days. Still was kind of nice to have a moment of glory. I agree wholeheartedly with Lion In Winter. Winnign isn't everything -- it's usually only a very small part of why we participate in our sports -- but it's nice when it comes along. Again, congratulations!

What was the course of fire? There are many clubs that shoot plates, but this is the first where I've heard that a revolver is required? (did I interpret that correctly?) Our club has falling plates with .22 on one day (minor) then other calibers (major) the next. There are a few that are faster with revolvers than the fastest autoloader guys. I tried shooting pins one day with a revolver. And held my own for a while, but the autoloaders did me in. It's club play, but the regulars have fierce competition between themselves.

I'll stick to rimfire Bullseye and Duelo for now. That has been the single most thing that has helped my long range pistol accuracy.

Jack, My club is basically a private range. Its web site is www.mattabassettrpc.com We have some sort of shoot every saturday.On the 1st and 3rd week of the month we shoot centerfire pistols at plates and rifles at bowling pins. On the 2nd week of the month we shoot 22 pistols and rifles and the IDPA league shoots on the 4th week. If there is a 5th week they try to set up something a liitle different such as revolver only like last week and pistol caliber carbine as the rifle segment. A suggestion was made for a back up gun only shoot on another 5th week with a shotgun only as the longarm portion.

Some guys use revolvers at the regular matches. One guy named Steve I think, who is a real good shooter who always uses the revolver. He wins alot. If you can run the plates without a miss you are ok but I can't reload my S+W anywhere close to as fast as my CZ.

I know what you mean about reloading the revolvers. With practice you can be fast, but not as fast as reloading an auto. I gambled at the one and only pin shoot I've participated in. I was going head to head with a guy shooting a 1911/Kimber. (he had a pair of them), And we both shot 6 at 5 pins. Each of us had a pin that didn't leave the table. We both reloaded. I gambled with only putting one round in the cylinder. Aligned for a single shot. For me this was quicker than using a full speed loader. I don't practice with them. It paid off, and I cleared the table before him, mostly because of the harder hitting magnum loads I was using. The pin left the table twice as fast as his. My glory was short lived, as we both ended up in the loser's bracket later that morning and he cleaned the table next to me and killed me on the timer. The winner of the day, He shot two guns. Glock in 45acp, and a Smith with moon clips. Same load in each. Young guy put us all to shame. He was clearing five pins at just under 3 seconds with either pistol.

Jack, Our plates are easy to knock over so the guys who reload use very low powered rounds. No Magnum rounds for us! Actually I used my 1911 once and some of the plates would bounce back up. Which was sort of disconcerting. For the centerfire shooots we draw from holsters but for the 22 shoots we start with the pistol muzzle touching a bench.

The format is usually a set of qualifying rounds to set a handicap then the elimination rounds. Lose 3 and you're out. For me just the pressure of going to the elimination rounds makes me shoot worse. But, its more fun than I would have expected and thats because of the good nature of the people at the events

There's a Pin shoot this weekend. Too bad my kids have soccer games Saturday morning! -And get this. I don't have any 45ACP loaded. And it appears that my new Kimber needs a new/stronger recoil spring

I'll get the bugs worked out. That group of folks is going to have to deal with me sometime or another. (They're a great bunch too. Even the Canadian ones.) Not that I'm much to deal with, but my first time early in the spring, I surprised myself with revolver. I know I can do better with autoloader.

Last night was an informal indoor Bullseye practice for our league that'll be starting in a couple weeks. Rimfire for me. Scored a 540 and a 546. I know I can shoot better than that. I'm still getting used to having a Red Dot sight to look through.
