I'd like to trick my SR9c a bit. Not even sure what can be done to it, so would you guys make some suggestions for;
  • Mods to the gun itself
  • With whom to entrust this work
Thanks, guys.

And... this gun only. Not interested in suggestions for other pistols.

Mods: I should have posted this in Autoloaders. Would you move it for me? Thanks!

Where is the pistol falling short currently? What isn't it doing that you want it to? If there isn't really anything wrong with your SR9c why put money into fixing it? Buy ammo instead.

I have several compact and subcompact plastic pistols and they are what they are. I have never considered putting money into any of them. They either suit my purpose or they don't. Having a gun smith trick out your SR9c is probably going to cost you more than you originally paid for the pistol. You would probably be better off using the money too purchase a different pistol if the SR9c isn't suitable for your purposes.

If you want a pistol to trick out you would be much better off with a Glock, Sig 320 or CZ that have tons of after market upgrades that you can install yourself. There just isn't much aftermarket support for the SR9c and a good gunsmith isn't going to be cheap.

I have a couple of tricked out 1911's that I bought from friends. When they wanted to trade them in at the gun shop, gun show or used car dealer I told them I would match what ever they could get for them. All the smithing and work they had done on them didn't mean anything when trading them in or selling them. They were simply used 1911's and valued as such. You could easily have a $500, $600 or more SR9c that isn't appreciably different than what you have now.

You forgot to tell the "why mod it" crowd that this is a personal decision you made and has no affect on their preferences............

Aside from Bubba have you actually seen any custom SR9’s??

I don’t know of anyone, and I buy customs.

After Duck Duck Going it, it looks like your options are.....

Stippling, which I would probably do as that really helps with plastic/polymer grips.

A paint job, which I usually dont do to handguns, but hey, surprise us. :)

Jeweling the barrel hood. A little gaudy for me, but.....

Ruger's autos really never interested me, but the SR9 would be the one I might cozy up to. If it were mine, Id get the soldering iron out and stipple the grip, and take a Dremel to the safety lever tab.

I have an SR9C, and I've never considered modifying it. It would definitely cost me more to do anything to it than the gun is worth, as I received it as a reward for selling a lot of Rugers when I worked at Bud's. The gun "is what it is". Trigger pull is long, heavy, and gritty, the slide release is difficult to actuate, and it has the generally klunky feel of Ruger autos.....but so far it has been utterly reliable, which is why I keep it.

I can't weigh in on the gun itself, but will mention that finding a reliable gunsmith can be a trick. For local 'smiths I tend to farm out some minor tasks to them - action jobs, etc. - and if they do it right and on time, then I will try them for more complex things. For things I really want done right, or specialist tasks that really require experience, I refer to the American Pistolsmiths Guild. They have a useful search page, making it easy to find just who you need. No guarantees even here, but I think the odds of avoiding a horror story are much higher.

And the trigger on mine is the best of all my semi-autos.
So what is left to improve?
Stippling or just grip tape to improve the grasp.
Dawson has a fibre optic front that I would consider an improvement. Trijicon makes night sights to fit.
I can't think of anything else that would not be simply cosmetic.
Oh, wait, you could get the barrel ported, superfluous holes are very fashionable now.
