I somewhat recently got an October 1942 Springfield Special Grade from the CMP. It came with a new production Walnut stock. It was suggested to me (by ReloadRon I believe) to treat the stock with some oil, so I did. I tore it apart, put 4 coats of Tung Oil on it (from Garand Gear) and put it all together, with some help. I may put some Gunny Paste on there, not sure yet. Here's the results!

Can't lie, I really do like how it came out

Keep going, four coats of pure Tung Oil is good, but ten is better! No kidding... I have an old Stevens .22 stock with ten coats of pure Tung Oil that's hard as a rock and completely waterproof. Over time it's also become darker and the grain is even more evident.

Thanks all! I thought about adding more coats, but I was happy where it was, and the 4th coat didn't absorb a whole lot, so I figured it'd be a good place to stop. I may add a new coat in a year as a touch up

Looks great. a '42 receiver Garand with, I assume a new Criterian barrel. Now get it out and put it to work. Nothing is better than a Garand! Should be a great shooter.

Yup, has a new barrel and wood. I lucked out as it came in the mail the same day that they sold out of the special grades. I shot it once before I did the stock work and absolutely love it. Can't wait to get it back out again.

Is yours an '06 or .308?

Mine was similar, a "Special Receiver" edition I got 3 years ago ... It's got an HRA receiver with a new Criterion tube installed by CMP armorers (mine's a .308 but '06 was an option), along with all U.S.G.I. parts and new CMP (Dupage) wood.

Shoots great.
