Firearm ownership and resident aliens?

It is going to take me 14 years to gain Us citizenship (total), 14 years of living in the land of the free without a firearm(s) to defend myself.........I don't think so.

I know how that feels. I spent years going through the system for my green card, including almost a year to prove that I was actually male and they printed my greencard wrongly.

I decided against citizenship, since I am not willing to give up my British citizenship and being a dual citizen will result in you losing many of the protections given to a citizen from both countries. Dual citizens get screwed over big time.

Have a CCW. Like my Sig p226.

I understand your frustration. I am not a fan of the rules change of 2002 or the administration that brought it about, and I stated so.

You are the first to come back with a reasonable response so I well respond in kind. I believe that the 2nd should apply to citizens only as a right, just as voting and holding public office. With that said, I believe that the privilege of firearms ownership should be extended to some non-citizens under some circumstances. I believe it should be every bit as hard for a non-citizen to get a firearm in this country as it is for citizens to obtain CCW/CPL licenses.

Good Luck on your long struggle, I believe it will be worth the effort.

Good Luck & Be Safe

AntiqueCollector, I am not asking your approval of my dissent, I do not wish to debate the issue with you, UNLESS you are one of the idiots who changed the laws back in 2002. It simply IS WHAT IT IS, a statement by a citizen of the United States, it does not violate the conditions of this forum, it does not "incite to riot" it does not "harm the public good". If it stimulates others to respond, then perhaps it was not as "evil" a comment as some of you think.

As I said, I am not pointing this a anyone, I am exercising MY right to decent and state that I FEEL that the 2nd should only apply to citizens of the U. S.. Does anyone have a problem with that!

Bob, actually, that is the trap of the anti-gunners. Or as George Orwell would say, some animals are more equal than others. If the rignt of self defense comes from God, who are we to restrict this right. The problems is who we let into this country, not what rights they have when they are here.

Typical early gun control arguments: "We need gun control so the newly freed slaves aren't armed" or "We need gun control because we don't want all the immigrants to be armed".

(This is not to be confused with giving constitutional rights to enemy non-combatants who by treaty and international law have no such rights).

I would also much prefer that the 2nd Amendment apply to US citizens abroad where those rights are clearly needed.

FerFel, welcome. I'd be glad to have you in the US.

Your opinion is noted, you have the right to it.

"I would also much prefer that the 2nd Amendment apply to US citizens abroad where those rights are clearly needed." I know of no other country that honors a U.S. citizens right to bare arms, even during my service days in the military I was not allowed to carry off post in a foreign country.

I would be happy for FERFAL to come here and said as much.

wow, again?

Seems like every time we have a thread about this it ends up being locked. I'm a permanent resident, soon to be CHL holding, tax paying, social security contributing gun owner. I'm eligible to apply for citizenship in Apr of next year.

In response to the OP: my understanding is that typically you have to be a green card holder in order to own a gun. There are some exceptions to do with hunting permits etc. The best thing to do is to check out BATFE regulations yourself. Some have done a pretty good job posting portions of that.

Nod

Before I became a US citizen - and just had my green card - I had to establish 6 mos provable residence in Tx before I could purchase a firearm. Heck, I even got my CHL before my citizenship :D.

I considered it a good start to my residency here!
