Firearms and the South

...cause we're smarter...

...oh, and more agararian...and have suffered deprivation of arms after the Civil War and learned that without arms, the government can make us do anything they want to...("Reconstruction" and Carpetbaggers)...and have decided NEVER AGAIN!!!...activities suggested...you Yankees buy more guns and realize why you need to....

...seriously, until recent years...we had more places to go and shoot...snakes...turtles, etc as well as game...weather is more conducive to outdoor events, and it's been a family way of life...
...in Pa...my grandpa had NO guns...my dad had a .22 pump and a .35 Pump...we lived with miles of woods all around us...he never took me out in the backyard with a rifle...not once...when he died (I was 13 1/2)...we moved to La...within two years I had my own shotgun and his old .22 rifle...within 4 I had 6 long guns and 15 handguns...when I went to one uncle's, we shot and worked, another, we hunted and worked...to grandpa's we ate and hunted...and cut firewood...guns were very central to our society down here...up in Pa...some hunted but few(in my area, anyways) just went shooting....

Most kids, boys and girls, down here were raised hunting and shooting. A lot still are. It is considered a rite of passage to get your own gun. Girls are often in compitition with their brothers (or even boyfriends) to see who takes a deer first. EVERYBODY here has a"dad's old gun". It is just part of life here.

Don't confuse South and North with South and Northeast...and even then.

Firearms are very popular here in Indiana. Very popular in Michigan, Minnesota, Wisconsin, North Dakota, Maine, New Hampshire (hell it's Live Free or Die up there), Vermont...and even up-state New York.

The locality has little bearing on popularity. It is just that the big cities in the northeast (and Chicago) are very much about controlling their people and many of their state laws then reflect that.

Indiana, has some of the best guns laws north of the Mason Dixon line and east of the Mississippi...we get a 9 out of 100 on the Brady score.

Not a North South thing.

...no, but it got a rise on a coooooooold mornin', didn't it!!! Guns are fun anywhere we live...just more problematic some places than others....

...I did...and I was born and reared in Pa. y'all come on down...we got lots of room in Tx....

Why would I want to move to a state with less rights, especially firearms related (Hi, open carry?) and, you know.... lots of Texans? :D

We are not all gun owners down here. Why, I am 61 years old and during my lifetime I can remember having encountered at least two households that owned no guns. Of course, they had convicted felons in the home!

We still have northern transplants who freak out on opening day of dove season or when someone is sighting in their deer rifles. They associate shooting sounds with crimes being commited and call the police to report it. Locals native to the area just grab their guns and go join the fun.

haha... I love this. I listen to a scanner when I am on call for the FD as we provide mutual aid for other towns so I like to know if something is coming. It was deer season, opening weekend and the county was called about suspicious activity... a car with two gunmen pulled up near this man's house and went into the woods... the deputy had the dispatcher as what they were wearing... with a little chuckle in her voice she reported they were wearing bright orange clothes.

LOL... The deputy stopped by and let them know they were probably safe.

Even though I live in Maine, I bet that where I live if you took away the weather differences we would be very similar.

I agree with HoosierQ that it is probably more of a urban vs rural/agrarian thing than a North South thing. As far as coming down here-Ya'all don't want to do that the South is a horrible place to live. It's hot, humid, we all live back in the swamps & eat possum. Besides there are already more yankees down here than you can shake a stick at. Between them & the illegals we've been overrun.

Why are firearms more popular in the South?

Society wise, it's because of farming and ranching activities, historically there has been a need to be much more self sufficient and firearms are a large part of that.

Politically, it's because we (for the most part) elect people to serve us, not rule us.

...here in Tx...men with guns and orange clothes might mean another jailbreak..."Bill, get the dogs!!!!! I'll get the guns!!!!
would be a good response:D:D:D

My Scots,Welsh,English ancestors came by the normal route. Arrived in Virginia in early 18th century, moved to South Carolina in late 18th century,Georgia in early 19th century and finally Alabama in late 19th century(1883). Every one of them either fought for and/or supported the 2nd Amendment as well as all the others. It is just like breathing take away our guns and we die.

Yep, it's horrible down here. In addition to the above, the cost of living down here is outrageous...that's why we have to eat possum, sardines, pigs feet, pork brains, souse and tree rats. There are even wild critters running around with leprosy and they're immune to bullets! Save yourself and turn back!!!

Firearms are as popular in a whole lot of areas outside the South (most of the West, a lot of the rural Northeast, Midwest, etc.) as they are here. In my opinion, I think the "gun ownership is a suthern thang" stereotype is largely a media myth; gun ownership is an AMERICAN thing.

Nor is the South the most gun-friendly region of the USA. My state of NC is rated 13th strictest gun laws in the nation by the Brady Campaign, and IIRC Alabama was 19th. The gun laws of New Hampshire, Vermont, Minnesota, and Oregon are far better than they are here.
