I have an uncle who has been tinkering in woodworking for a number of years. He's always after me to come up with some "project" for him to make for me. He knows I'm interesting into guns and shooting so he'd like whatever it is to be related. (I guess he thinks I'd appreciate it more, and would actually get some use out of it).

He's done the usual gun racks and a cabinet or two, plus some shelfs etc for my reloading bench. I really have appreciated everthing he's done for me, but frankly I'm out of ideas.

So does anyone have any ideas, or plans or links for woodworking projects that somehow relate to firearms? I don't want to ask him for anything huge, or terribly expensive (though he's never mentioned cost or anyting). I've combed the web and found some plans for a shooting box and a portable shooting bench, but I don't really have use for either, but any other ideas would be more than welcomed.

My great uncle made a few sets of grips to fit my grandfather's and father's K frames. One set of which noew resides on my L frame. Will post a pic later this evening.

I am in the same mind as your Uncle: a woodworking shooter type.

Something that would hold the rifle or shotgun while cleaning it and also hold the cleaning supplies would be nice. You can buy them made from plastic, but hickory or butternut is so much nicer to look at and will take a lot of abuse.

Upright rotating long gun rack?

Rotating pistol rack with coated rods to slide into the handgun barrels?

I like woodworking also and want to make a pistol rack for my safe to hold 6 or so pistols upright (barrel pointing to back of safe.. But not sure how to go about it. I don't have a very Creative Mind :cuss:

Maybe he can come up with something like that

Cleaning stands ( vices ) for rifle/shotgun , and another that holds a handgun vertical for cleaning , parts tray lined with the material from magnetic signs so parts dont walk off , reverse shadow box frame that holds picture(s) for display and opens up , containing a handgun . A good heavy reloading/cleaning table with cubbys for supplys . The list is almost endless LOL If he just wants to throw something togeather how about a portable. self contained folding shooting bench made from a sheet of plywood . There are several patterns out there , if you have troubles finding one and want a shooting bench let me know i have a file or two i can upload .

i agree with garrett1955. if hes good.have him make you a rifle stock. that way you have a reason to go out and build a rifle on it

I'll second TimboKhan's suggestion of a rifle lamp. I'm working on one right now patterned after the AR 15, which happens to be my favorite.

Two Words: Rifle. Lamp.

My grandparents had a lamp made out of a French 8MM Lebel for years, then my dad sold the rifle. It was really, really ugly, almost as bad as a Mosin Nagant lamp.

If anyone has plans or ideas for a nice cabinet, post up, I have been wanting to build one for a while.

Just a word of warning, if anyone is thinking of grips out of cocobolo, wear protective grear whil working on them.

The oils can cause a rash, and the dust can cause serious problems.

But you would be hard pressed to find a more beutiful wood...

Few years ago I needed a secure place to store some long guns and couldn't afford a safe. Built myself a coffee table with a hidden drawer that would only pull out if you turned one leg 90*. Holds 6 rifles in a felt liner and weights over 300lbs.
