Firearms confiscated by TSA

Its almost like the TSA isn't actually stopping any security threats, just inconveniencing a lot of generally law abiding citizens and confiscating a lot of things that either couldn't or wouldn't (or both) be used to actually hijack or destroy an airplane!
My point exactly.

If you have a loaded gun some where among your possessions and you have forgotten that it was there. Shame on you. You are an irresponsible gun owner. How many other loaded firearms do you have sitting around that you have forgotten about that some one else might stumble across. Maybe even a child!

Anyone else remember what flying commercial was like before the Department of Homeboy Security and the TSA? I do. Nobody had to be searched or had to "declare" their sidearm - they just wore it under a jacket and nobody cared. Were passengers terrified of hijackings back then? Of course not. But we are now. Are we
safer"? Not when TSA misses 95% of replica guns, knives and explosives EVERY time they get tested. We are just hassled and inconvenienced. For no reason.

A good friend of mine absent mindedly left a Glock in a bag that he carried onto a plane. It sailed through, no problem.

Several years ago, numbers from TSA test teams appeared in the press. TSA missed about 60% of the firearms in that sample.

It's security theater.

Figured. I was also kinda hoping to bring the thread back on track. :)
Uh, actually, no. The OP asked what happens to firearms confiscated by TSA; it didn't appear that he was soliciting personal opinions of the agency or its effectiveness in accomplishing its stated mission.

At any rate, I didn't read the post as an invitation to bash TSA, which frankly doesn't seem necessary on this forum.

Really? It wasn't necessary to declare a pistol, and a person could wear it concealed as long as they were compliant with the laws of the states they were departing from and arriving to? If so, I guess it had to be unloaded.

Unless I missed a post, the question wasn't answered yet.

Did you fly on Ford Trimotors? Those days are really way before the 60s.

No, it was in the late 60s/ early 70s. I traveled a lot in the military. I never once saw anyone wanded or frisked or searched or scanned. They never even asked if you had a sidearm. Nobody ever said it had to be unloaded. How would they know if they didn't inspect it? The subject was never brought up because it was none of their business and people were not terrified of hijackers. What year were you born?

The bigger question is how many got through? Historically, TSA has had detection failure rates as high as 95%. If we assume only a 50% failure rate for firearms, this means that some 4200 times last year, there were firearms on our flights. It's a good thing these are overwhelmingly middle aged white men who forgot, rather than young Middle Eastern men hellbent on destruction.....

Your stereotyping of Muslims is uncalled for. What fraction of shooting deaths in the USA is caused by Muslims. What, white people don’t get angry?

I don’t believe that. Just because they miss fingernail clippers, doesn’t mean they miss guns.

If I remember correctly,Muslims are the reason the TSA was born.
Am I angry about Muslims because I pointed that out?
Answer to that is no
